Meanwhile, Manchester City set the Premier League record for most points, most goals and most wins in a single season by beating Brighton 3-1 while Tottenham Hotspur edged out Newcastle 1-0 - courtesy of a Harry Kane goal - to snatch a Champions League berth.

But all Australian eyes were on Stamford Bridge as Mooy helped ensure his newly-promoted club’s safety.

But with Mooy playing a key part as an outlet in his attacking midfield role and having the last kick of the game with a free-kick that he dinked into the corner, Huddersfield held on to secure the crucial point with Southampton and Swansea now fighting to stay up in Sunday’s last round of games.

Missing just one game all season, Mooy’s four goals and four assists – not to mention his durability – have been crucial for the Terriers, who defied the odds to stay in the top flight for another year.

Mooy looms as a key for the Socceroos at next month’s World Cup, with the Socceroos facing France, Denmark and Peru.

Conversely, the result was a hammer blow to Chelsea’s bid for a Champions League berth next season.

Currently in fifth place, Chelsea’s attempt to salvage a troubled season by finishing in the top four is now out of their hands heading into the final game of the season at Newcastle this weekend.

Chelsea need Liverpool to slip up at home to Brighton while at the same time they must beat Newcastle to grab fourth spot.

Laurent Depoitre’s goal was enough for Huddersfield to stay up.

Manchester City moved onto 97 points with their win over Mat Ryan’s Brighton, which is two more than Chelsea’s final total from the 2004-05 season, and 105 goals, two more than Chelsea’s previous record haul from the 2009-10 season.

Pep Guardiola’s team also now has 31 wins, surpassing the previous record of 30 set by Chelsea last season.

City won a record 18 straight games on its way to clinching the league title with five matches, matching a record held by Manchester United.

Arsene Wenger’s penultimate game in charge of Arsenal ended in depressingly familiar fashion as the 10-man Gunners were defeated 3-1 at Leicester.

Arsenal remain the only team in England’s top four leagues without a point away from home this year having now lost seven straight Premier League games on the road.

Swansea will join Stoke and WBA in the Championship barring a 10-goal swing in goal difference between the Welsh side and Southampton.

Swansea host Stoke on the final day while Southampton are at home to champions Manchester City.
