Mary Fowler scores another two goals for Manchester City against Arsenal

With Sam Kerr still on the sidelines courtesy of her knee injury, another Matildas goalscoring star is lighting up in England.

Fowler scores double in City loss

Matildas star Mary Fowler continued her red-hot goalscoring streak for Manchester City, netting a double against Arsenal and taking her tally to five goals in her past five WSL games, stamping her star status.

Fowler earnt high praise from coach Gareth Taylor despite City going down 4-3 to a Gunners side also featuring her Matildas teammates Kyra Cooney-Cross and Steph Catley.

Cooney-Cross also helped her team hit the scoresheet, curling in a special free kick that Lotte Wubben-Moy headed home to put the visitors 2-0 up after just eight minutes.

Fowler then nailed a rare headed goal inside the far post and added a second with a 55th minute penalty after Catley was ruled to have impinged.

Not only has Fowler found the back of the net five times in the past five games, she’s also handed out three assists and, in the absence of injured Matildas captain Sam Kerr, has arguably become Australia’s best player in the English league.

Having recovered from going 2-0 down, Taylor said his team showed good fight to keep them in fourth spot on the WSL table, with nine more games still to play and the Blues just two points outside the top three.

“Of course it’s a blow, you don’t want to lose games against teams you compete with in those places,” the boss said of our defeat to Arsenal.

“That’s our objective now, to be in the qualification places at the end of the season.

“If we’re gaining positives and it’s hard to pick them out, but the fightback was really good, we kept coming back after 2-2 and 3-3 as well.

“A lot of things weren’t quite right with us today, that start, two goals in eight minutes is really difficult to deal with, but the players eventually got back at the start of the second half and turned it round.

“I felt even at 2-1 down I thought we had lots of oppos, Aoba and Mary were very good, we felt we could hurt them in those areas, we just needed to be better without the ball today.”
