Shaun Marsh wants Shield match abandoned after being struck several times on dangerous pitch

Shaun Marsh was struck several times during his innings at the MCG and after being sent for a concussion test, wants the match abandoned due to the unsafe condition of the pitch.

Shaun Marsh was struck on the body four or five times in his 57-ball innings before match referee Bob Parry finally put a stop to Saturday’s dangerous Sheffield Shield match at the MCG.

Marsh, 36, has been seeing it like a beach ball recently and has scored unbeaten centuries from his past two games, albeit against the white ball and then the red ball.

But Western Australia’s captain was dismissed for 10 runs and then booked for a concussion test late on Saturday as he feared for his safety.

Marsh declared the Sheffield Shield match against Victoria should be abandoned.

“I can’t see us getting back on,” Marsh said.

“We saw guys getting hit on the head and it was disappointing. When Marcus got hit on that last occasion it was pretty realistic that the pitch was unplayable.

“I probably got hit four or five times, and we saw after lunch when the wicket got a little bit harder and there was a lot of divots out there it became unplayable.”

Marsh spoke briefly on ABC radio but just minutes later he was pulled from WA’s press conference to undergo a concussion test.

Instead Warriors coach Adam Voges stepped in and said he would not put his batsmen back out in unsafe conditions.

“We saw a number of deliveries misbehave,” Voges said.

“We’ve got a couple of guys who have had to do concussion tests today and a couple of sore fingers and some sore ribs as well.

“I think they’re OK, but my experience with concussion is you might not know until tomorrow anyway.”

The MCG pitch will be inspected before Sunday’s scheduled 10am start when a decision on whether to play on will be made.

Should play continue there was no clarity on whether the scores would reset or if WA’s 3-89 would stand.

It is understood that the points would be shared should the match be abandoned.
