India show off rising star Prithvi Shaw to Aussie fans for first time during clash with Cricket Australia X1

Twenty-seven years after a certain 18-year-old Indian superstar made two centuries against Australia, India’s next teenage sensation has arrived. And didn’t Prithvi Shaw make a big first impression.

Twenty-seven years after an 18-year-old Sachin Tendulkar made two centuries against Australia, India’s next teenage sensation has arrived.

Prithvi Shaw is Test cricket’s latest Indian phenomenon, and the boy wonder described as part Tendulkar, part Brian Lara by his coach, introduced himself to Australian shores with an effortless 66 off 69 balls in a tour game on Thursday at the SCG.

As a 14-year-old, Shaw made headlines around the world when he smashed 546 runs in a junior match, and shortly after landed a $60,000 bat sponsorship deal with the MRF heavyweights that supported Tendulkar and Virat Kohli.

Not all child stars make it to Hollywood, but on Test debut last month against West Indies, Shaw made a stunning century to announce himself as the heir apparent to King Kohli.

During Sydney’s big wet Shaw sat on the edge of Kohli’s bed and hammered the joystick playing PlayStation 4, and on Wednesday they took turns tuning up for Australia’s superstar bowling line-up with classy half centuries against a rookie Cricket Australia XI.

The hype surrounding Shaw’s arrival in Australia is reminiscent of Tendulkar back in 1991-92 when he struck massive centuries at the SCG and Perth on his first tour.

Tendulkar worked over the likes of Shane Warne, Merv Hughes and Craig McDermott to make 148 not out at the SCG in January ’92 — just his second Test century.

Shaw, who turned 19 a few days ago, is a player in Sachin’s own image and is now promising the same threat.

Hailing from Tendulkar’s home town of Mumbai and standing at the same diminutive 165cm proportions, Shaw’s mother died when he was just four years of age and from his small flat in the outer reaches he would ride the Mumbai local trains in search of his cricketing dream.

Every morning he would rise at 4.30am to journey the 70km into the heart of Mumbai to train, before a politician learnt of his talent and plight and gave him accommodation closer to the practice facilities.

The fascinating rise of the latest golden child is one that will captivate the cricketing world.

But the Cricket Australia XI packed with wet-behind-the-ears players of their own are already well aware of what he’s capable of.

Shaw was the captain of the Indian side that accounted for Australia in the under 19s World Cup last year, and several of those players turned out for the CA XI on Thursday.

India coach Ravi Shastri — who made 200 the same day as Tendulkar’s arrival at the SCG — has lived and breathed Indian cricket through the past three generations of mega stars and says Shaw is truly a rare talent.

“He (Shaw) is born to play cricket. He’s been playing since the age of eight in the (streets) of Mumbai,” said Shastri.

“You can see all that hard work showing. He’s a spectators’ delight.

“There’s a bit of Sachin there, a bit of Viru (Virender Sehwag) in him and when he walks — there’s a bit of Lara as well.

“If he can keep his head on his shoulders and keep the work ethic, he has a bright future.”

But his Instagram shows the new little master, is still a kid at heart — playing PlayStation with his idol, skipper and mentor.
