Victorious Aussie women’s T20 team already looking ahead to title defence on home soil in 2020

Alyssa Healy wants to play in front of 90,000 people at the MCG and she’s confident Aussie women’s cricket can ‘ride the wave’ from their World Cup victory to make it happen in early 2020.

Aussie batting dynamo Alyssa Healy has a dream to play in front of 90,000 people at the MCG.

And the 28-year-old has predicted women’s cricket can “ride the wave” from its stunning World Cup victory in the Caribbean to make it happen when Australia hosts the next T20 World Cup in early 2020.

Australia’s player of the tournament in the Caribbean, Healy and her victorious teammates arrived home to celebrate their World Cup triumph at Federation Square on Thursday.

After claiming their fourth T20 crown, the team is already looking ahead to the defence of their title on home soil — and want it to be a record-breaking feat.

“The home T20 World Cup is going to be an awesome experience,’’ Healy said.

“Hopefully it’s us playing on the MCG in that final and they’re looking to break that record and get 90-odd thousand there.

“It would be something unbelievably special and no one in this group has played in front of any sort of crowd like that.

“It will take a lot of hard work, but in saying that I think the way that the game is growing at the moment, people are really interested in the Big Bash and the women’s game and hopefully we can just see it go from strength to strength.

“I think everyone will jump on the Big Bash again this year and we can just keep riding that wave. It’s pretty cool for women’s sport at the moment.’’

Healy admitted the homecoming celebrations on Thursday were far different from Australia’s last World Cup victory in 2014.

“The three-peat we came home anonymous and celebrated together as a group,’’ Healy said.

“To come here after a World Cup win and celebrate with Melbourne has been really special.’’

Healy hit a tournament-high 225 runs from five innings, at a blistering strike rate of 144 at the World Cup.

Her player of the tournament nod was not only reward for her outstanding performances with the bat — but also gave her bragging rights at home with husband Mitchell Starc.

“He thought he was going to be the only one to win a player of the tournament in the household,’’ Healy said.

“I couldn’t let him have it. I didn’t let him have it for too long. It’s really cool.’’

Australia captain Meg Lanning predicted the team was capable of something special together in the coming years.

“We’ve been able to introduce some new players to our squad and it’s given us really good variety,’’ Lanning said.

“There is no question that we are capable of something really special coming up. We’ve got a home T20 World Cup coming up here in just under two years so we’re looking forward to continuing to improve and hopefully we can play well there, too.’’
