Fresh off a runner-up finish in KFC SuperCoach NRL, the team from SC Playbook are back and planning on going one better in KFC SuperCoach BBL.

They’ve come up with a team full of players with early doubles and a few point-of-difference selections.

One of their bowlers only features in 6 per cent of teams and they think he might be one of the “elite” scorers of BBL10.

This is the team they have picked to target another tilt at rankings glory.

Ben Dunk is a wicketkeeper coaches will be considering due to a Round 1 double.

WICKET-KEEPERS

Josh Philippe (Sydney Sixers) $150,000 WKP-BAT

Philippe is hard to ignore having scored three KFC SuperCoach centuries last campaign, including 189 points in the tournament’s opening round. He’s a player that’s rapidly on the rise, and I’m hoping additional catches/stumpings can somewhat offset any low scores with the bat.

BENCH

Ben Dunk (Melbourne Stars) $62,500 WKP-BAT

This spot is completely up for grabs due to the mass uncertainty surrounding the Round 1 make up of the Stars. Should Nicholas Pooran be made available I’ll try find a way to get him into my squad, likely at the expense of Philippe, but if not I don’t mind Dunk or Seb Gotch at a bargain price. I’m also tinkering strongly with the idea of picking Baxter Holt on the bench to use the VC loophole to great effect, while freeing up some cash.

Chris Lynn is much lower in price than in previous BBL campaigns.

BATSMEN

D’Arcy Short (Hobart Hurricanes) $245,200 BAT-BWL

Short is priced through the roof for obvious reason. He’ll be the most purchased player in Round 2 so I don’t see the point in waiting and burning an inevitable trade on an elite KFC SuperCoach player.

Glenn Maxwell (Melbourne Stars) $185,000 BAT-BWL

Maxwell hasn’t been in great form of late in the IPL, but it’s promising to see him bowling plenty of overs. I think it’s a case of picking him without hesitation or risk getting left behind early in the SuperCoach campaign.

Chris Lynn (Brisbane Heat) $131,900 BAT

Lynn is a guy I wanted to leave out as a POD move, but looking at the Heat’s batting roster he has an even more important role to play than most years. They look light on in the top order, so the explosive opener may have to slightly reel in his shot selection to stabilise this side and I’m hoping it leads to more consistent scoring this campaign. At a generous price of $131,900 there may be plenty of non-owners shaking their heads after the opening few rounds.

Peter Handscomb (Hobart Hurricanes) $97,600 WKP-BAT

Handscomb has the double in week two, and despite a bit of a rollercoaster run of form in recent years I’m happy to back his class to provide value at a bargain price.

Max Bryant is looking to bounce back from a poor run in BBL09.

Max Bryant (Brisbane Heat) $67,800 BAT

This is based on Bryant opening alongside Lynn in what is a light top order for the Heat, so pre-season news will be vital. I’ve always had time for Bryant, particularly in the short format. He struggled last season, but you only need to look back to 2018/19 where he scored 335 runs at 27.91 with a strike-rate of 150.22 to see his potential.

BENCH

Jake Weatherald (Adelaide Strikers) $122,500 BAT

Weatherald is a high-class batsman and has always been a bit of an X-factor in SuperCoach at low ownership. I’ll be storing him on my bench for the Strikers’ double in Round 2.

Matt Short (Adelaide Strikers) $65,300 BAT

I’ll be closely monitoring the Strikers’ pre-season news to try and work out what role Short will play early on this season. He’s always floated at different positions in the batting order, while his involvement with ball in hand is just as volatile. At the price I’m willing to take a chance as he’ll play four games across Rounds 2 and 3.

Nathan Coulter-Nile is well-priced for a bowler with a Round 1 double.

BOWLERS

Marcus Stoinis (Melbourne Stars) $185,700 BAT-BWL

Much like Maxwell, I think you’re risking falling behind very quickly if you don’t start with Stoinis for the Round 1 double. He barely rolled the arm over last season, but has frequently bowled in the IPL for Mumbai which is a very promising sign. He’ll also be given the captain’s armband to start the year.

Will Jacks (Hobart Hurricanes) $148,000 BAT-BWL

The 22-year-old is batting at three for Surrey in English County cricket, opening the bowling, and has a career strike-rate in T20s of 149.34. YES PLEASE.

Nathan Coulter-Nile (Melbourne Stars) $138,600 BWL

Coulter-Nile is fit and healthy and has been in decent form for Mumbai in the IPL.

He’s a strong chance to bowl at the death for the Stars, hopefully leading to additional wickets, and we know he’s capable of some big hitting late in the innings.

The SC Playbook team are wondering where the love is for proven BBL performer Andrew Tye.

Andrew Tye (Perth Scorchers) $134,100 BWL

Having missed last tournament due to injury, I feel Tye is somewhat the forgotten man of SuperCoach as he currently sits in under 6 per cent of teams. His past two seasons he had averages of 52.1 and 50.6 which is very promising. He’ll bowl overs at the death and has the potential to be among the elite scorers in the game if his body holds up.

Billy Stanlake (Melbourne Stars) $75,400 BWL

Big Billy has the opening round double and is dirt cheap making him hard to ignore.

BENCH

Will Sutherland (Melbourne Renegades) $79,900 BAT-BWL

While it can be a useful tactic to go with bottom dollar bench players early on to maximise on-field value, it can be just as useful spending a few extra bucks to generate overall squad value. Sutherland should bowl his four overs each match and feature often with the willow, so hopefully he can fill a role at some stage for me.

Jake Wildermuth (Brisbane Heat) $62,500 BAT-BWL

With Ben Cutting and James Pattinson leaving the Heat there should be some decent overs available for Wildermuth. He had SuperCoach scores of 88, 80 and 72 in the 2018/19 tournament, so hopefully he can somewhat replicate these and make some cash from the bench.
