SuperCoach NBL trade guide: Who to buy, hold, sell for round 4

How can you get ahead in SuperCoach NBL? The Basketball Blokes have the answers – read this before making your trades this week.

SuperCoach NBL | Round 4 Best Holds

It doesn’t matter if your team is charging or flopping.

Benny, Banksy and Boydie – the Basketball Blokes – are here to assist with tips to help you rebound.

These are the players you should consider buying, holding and selling in your SuperCoach NBL side for round 4.

SELL

Sell of the week: Denzel Valentine (SYD) $269,000 GRD/FWD

Sell Zel. There is no doubt he’s got game, but unfortunately expectations have not equalled reality with regards to SuperCoach scoring. The Kings have two guns as import playmakers; and it is clearly Jaylen Adams who is the man on fire at the moment.

Apart from the SuperCoach output, the other thing we don’t love about Valentine is the schedule. The Kings play single game rounds over the next two weeks, which is the equal worst schedule over that period.

Perhaps with a few more training days we will be able to see Valentine build the chemistry to improve his scoring. But for now, with DJ Hogg soon to be added to the mix, unfortunately for Denzel, he is out of time.

Others to consider selling ...

Matthew Dellavedova (MEL) $258,200 GRD

Dellavedova left the game against Brisbane having copped a nasty head knock. The play leading up to the incident was classic Delly; he put his body on the line and attempted to take a charge before falling backwards and having Sam McDaniel’s knee glance his head on the way down. The head contact with both the knee and the floor saw Delly struggle to get up and consequently take no further part in the game. We all wish Delly well; and given his history with concussion and the club’s history with Shae Ili over recent seasons, he may not be available for the upcoming round.

Aron Baynes (BRI) $233,900 CTR

Aron Baynes was suspended for five matches for the ugly incident with Adam Forde. We are yet to see if Brisbane will appeal the suspension, but if it stands, Baynes will miss this round and should be sold.

Bryce Cotton (PER) $425,700 GRD

Having discussed the Sydney schedule being the equal poorest over the next two rounds, the other club with the identical schedule is the Perth Wildcats. Most teams will not be fielding a full side on the double game round this week; and Cotton is the most obvious candidate to keep and play on the single game round. However, you will need to weigh up what you can do with Cotton’s value in a trade this week (perhaps to a United, Phoenix or 36er on the double game round) and decide if that gives you a better outcome than picking Cotton for the next couple of single game rounds.

BENNY’S BREAK EVENS

Each week Benny will list some of the notable Break Evens for the week ahead – players with low Break Evens are set to rise in price while high Break Evens indicate a looming price drop. Sign up to SuperCoach Plus for the full list of Break Evens plus more stats and tools to help your team.

• Bobi Klintman (-27, 0 games)

• Parker Jackson-Cartwright (-14, 1 game)

• Jonah Bolden (-6, 1 game)

• Trentyn Flowers (-2, 2 games)

• Mitch Creek (66, 2 games)

• Bryce Cotton (49, 1 games)

HOLD

Holds of the Week: Alex Sarr (PER), Alex Toohey (SYD) and Jaylin Galloway (SYD)

Both Perth and Sydney head into back-to-back rounds with only one game on the schedule; and are the only two clubs to do so. Whilst the schedule is important, so is value appreciation; and owners of Sarr, Toohey and Galloway will have appreciated their starts to the season.

Try and move each of these players to your bench if possible, but recognise that most teams will not have a full starting squad playing a double game round this week. There are some prime downgrade targets coming up in the following week with Josh Bannan close to returning and Bobi Klintman due to be the buy of the week the following round. Lock Jaylin away for at least one more week; and your next stars should also see next week.

BANKSY’S BARGAINS

Each week Banksy will rank his favourite bargain players regardless of schedule.

1. Parker Jackson-Cartwright (NZ) $277,000 GRD

PJC comes in with the lowest Break Even and the highest predicted price rise of those slated to play in round 4. The return of McDowell-White didn’t stop Jackson-Cartwright or his scoring ability, as we saw more of the same with 29 SuperCoach points against Brisbane and another 30 plus minutes of court time. The Breakers have a single this week, before a stretch of doubles, but with a predicted price rise of $44k – next week may be too late.

2. Jaylin Galloway (BRI) $225,600 FWD

For the second week running, Jaylin had the largest price spike in the competition – rewarding owners with another $48k rise and now sits at a $225k price tag. He will head into round 4 with a breakeven of six. Coming off scores of 43, 31 and 22, he has another couple of increases to come, but owners should continue to monitor the looming return of DJ Hogg.

3. Jonah Bolden (SYD) $254,300 FWD/CTR

Jonah was always going to take a few games to find his feet this season, but we are watching him turn into a points per minute beast. Back-to-back double-doubles last round in just 17 and 22 minutes played, he was tenacious on the glass grabbing 27 rebounds across the round, running at almost a rebound a minute. With a breakeven of -6, he won’t be $254k for long.

4. Tyrell Harrison (BRI) $178,700 CTR

Tyrell was always going to be the beneficiary with Aron Baynes serving a five-game suspension and Josh Bannan yet to return. He will play another three games as the main big man at the Bullets, so he will continue to play similar minutes to the 22 and 23 minute games we saw in round 3. He scored 13 and 27 SuperCoach points, but he was up against tough opponents in the Kings and United and was just shy of the double-double bonus in game two. With a breakeven of six and a friendly matchup against the Phoenix this week who are currently leaking points to bigs, Tyrell makes for a nice short-term play.

5. Trentyn Flowers (ADE) $112,700 GRD

Wow, what a game from left field for Trentyn Flowers. He put up 23 points and a season best 31 SuperCoach points to propel Adelaide to their first win of the season. After playing just 13, 6 and 10 minutes off the bench over his previous three games, Flowers earned himself 21 minutes as he caught the hot hand against Illawarra. It comes with its warning signs, but you would hope this most recent performance has earnt Flowers an uptick in minutes and most importantly an increase in confidence. With a -2 breakeven and a double game round for Adelaide, I can’t say I predicted Trentyn to feature in this week’s bargains. A high risk, high reward play.

BUY

Buy of the Week: Parker Jackson-Cartwright (NZ) $277,000 GRD

Having come off their short break, it is a short Breaker that is our buy of the week. Having played two games for scores of 57 and 29, the round 4 contest against Melbourne United will lock in a price increase given his negative Break Even. It was promising to see PJC score well alongside his hyphenated backcourt running mate in Will-McDowell White.

Since that time, the Breakers have signed Golden State Warriors player Anthony Lamb; but we do not expect that to detract from Jackson-Cartwright’s output. This week’s matchup against Melbourne United has been a difficult one for opposition SuperCoach scoring this season so you could elect to wait a week and get PJC in for their four double game rounds out of five starting from round 5. However, he will cost you more than $277,000.

BOYDIE’S BEST BUYS

Each week Boydie will rank the other best buys for the week ahead.

1. Gary Browne (SEM) $327,400 GRD

Coming off a 40 in Round 3 (32 in his previous game to this too!) and looking back to his bouncy best, Gary could be a great trade in to take advantage of the Phoenix double this round. Not only did he have 20 points in their Round 3 game against the JJ’s no less, he added nine rebounds, four assists and a steal so getting those stats across the boxscore, is he a possible captain option too?

2. Ariel Hukporti (MEL) $209,200 CTR

Hukporti has been in the best buys since preseason! His Break Even is still relatively low at 31 and coming off 45 SuperCoach points over United’s double in Round 3. He remains an excellent Centre for Round 4 and possibly Round 5 too with United’s opponents in those rounds.

SuperCoach NBL | Round 4 Best Buys

3. Chris Goulding (MEL) $249,100 GRD/FWD

Goulding was Melbourne United’s top SuperCoach scorer in Round 3 with 53. Given that Delly is under an injury cloud with a concussion in Sunday’s game, CG43 could be a nice little pick to get the two rounds of double games over the next two weeks.

4. Luke Travers (MEL) $291,300 GRD/FWD

It has been a fall from grace for LT having been the top scoring player in round 1. For those of you who don’t have him, we still think he is a more than handy signing this week. He is currently averaging under his Break Even so we want to see him lift over the next two rounds.

5. Mitch Creek (SEM) $372,000 (FWD)

The only premium priced player worth considering based on this week’s schedule, Creeky is doing a bit, but is it enough to grab him and chuck the captain tag on him this week? His last two games he has scored 31 and 34 but previous to this he wasn’t setting the world on fire. He has a Break Even in the 60s so he might lose some value unless he goes HUGE!

6. Trey Kell (ADL) $285,100 GRD

I cannot dispute Trey’s form the last couple games with a 33 in Round 3 after a 39 in the game before that. At most Kell is a one-week rental if you want to play the POD (point of difference) game this week as Adelaide starts a horror run of singles after this round.

7. Will Cummings (SEM) $321,100 GRD

With South East Melbourne’s double this week Will’s name should be coming into calculations due to his 73 SuperCoach point Round 2. But with his 19 against Tasmania on Saturday now we aren’t so sure. High Break Even of mid 60s, too, may come back to bite.
