America has unleashed on Denver Broncos quarterback Russell Wilson after he hit a new low in the side’s 51-14 loss to the LA Rams.

While the Rams are the defending Super Bowl champions, the side is just 5-10 for the season and already eliminated from the playoff picture, but made short work of the 4-11 Broncos.

Despite handing Wilson a blockbuster five-year $US245m ($A65m) contract extension for a total of $296m ($A442m) over the next seven-years with $US165m ($A246m) guaranteed, the Broncos are the worst offensive team in the NFL this season.

A saying from his Seattle Seahawks days was “let Russ cook” as he was seen as one of the elite QBs in the NFL but former coach Pete Carroll would settle on a run-heavy offence as the season went on.

Wilson went 15 from 27 in the match for 214 yards, throwing one touchdown, but gave away three interceptions before he was benched late for Brett Rypien.

It was also the biggest loss of Wilson’s career.

His first two interceptions handed the Rams a 17-0 lead in the first quarter, a lead the Broncos never looked to chase down.

It’s been an absolute nightmare season for the Broncos who sold the store for Wilson, giving away five draft picks — two first-rounders, two second-rounders, and a fifth-rounder — as well as Denver QB Drew Lock, defensive lineman Shelby Harris and tight end Noah Fant.

Wilson’s second interception was particularly brutal after he was shredded by SpongeBob SquarePants character Patrick Starr.

For those unfamiliar with the show, Patrick is a SpongeBob’s dimwitted best friend.

But on Nickolodeon’s Christmas broadcast, the character, voiced by Bill Fagerbakke, nailed Wilson, saying “That’s not what he wanted to cook!”

Commentator Noah Eagle added Wilson “burnt whatever he was cooking.”

It wasn’t such a laughing matter for others in the US.

Sports analyst Eric Rosenthal said Wilson “needs to be arrested for stealing $253 Million Dollars”.

Outkick.com’s Clay Travis wrote: “Russell Wilson’s collapse with the Broncos is one of the craziest I’ve seen in the NFL. Guy’s a hall of famer with the Seahawks and now he looks like one of the worst starters in the NFL. And the Broncos have 200+ million locked up in him. Baffled by it.”

Pittsburgh journalist Keith Barnes posted: “I’ve seen Russell Wilson a lot this year. He’s not even a shadow of what he was early in his career with Seattle. It’s like his talent dropped off a cliff and his decision-making went along for the ride. His contract — and trickle-down effect — will kill the Broncos for years.”

Fox Sports' Skip Bayless added: “The Denver Broncos got cooked by Russell Wilson.”
