Insane $470m moves re-shape NFL landscape
A blockbuster trade and the announcement of a mega-rich contract have stunned America, ending months of rumours.
Russell Wilson is on the move on a day of high drama in the NFL.
The Seahawks have agreed to trade the Super Bowl-winning quarterback to the Broncos.
The trade followed another stunning move with Aaron Rodgers reportedly agreeing to a mega-rich deal to stay in Green Bay, despite his public condemnation of his own team.
The Wilson deal that followed the news was an absolute blockbuster.
Seattle is reportedly receiving five draft picks: Two first-rounders, two second-rounders, and a fifth-rounder, The New York Post reports.
Denver quarterback Drew Lock and defensive lineman Shelby Harris are also a part of the deal, along with tight end Noah Fant, according to reports.
The trade is pending a physical and Wilson’s approval.
Wilson, a nine-time Pro Bowler, will join forces with new Broncos head coach Nathaniel Hackett, who previously served as the Packers offensive coordinator.
The duo will now face a stacked AFC West, which includes Patrick Mahomes and the Chiefs, Justin Herbert and the Charges, and Derek Carr and the Raiders.
The 33-year-old quarterback has long been the subject of trade rumours, even as recently as last week, when Seattle declined a hefty offer from the quarterback-needy Commanders.
Seahawks coach Pete Carroll said last week at the NFL Scouting Combine that the team had “no intention” of making a move.
Wilson, who has raised his family in Seattle with wife Ciara, publicly expressed his desire to remain in the northwest. In January, however, reports emerged that he wished to explore his options in the offseason.
He is leaving near the end of a four-year, $192 million deal. The 2019 contract was the richest deal the NFL had seen at the time.
The news of Wilson comes on the heels of Aaron Rodgers’ decision to remain with the Packers after reportedly agreeing to a four-year extension worth $69 million per season.
Rodgers, 38, had been linked to the Broncos, due in part to his previous relationship with Hackett.
NFL Network also reported the deal was four years and $275 million.
This week, it was reported that Denver was willing to go “all-in” to get the two-time NFL MVP.
The Broncos went “all-in” on Tuesday, just for another Super Bowl-winning quarterback, who already has a playmaker seemingly lobbying to go back to Denver.
Rodgers held out from the Packers last offseason in part over frustrations that he was not given enough say in personnel decisions and that led to a fractured relationship with GM Brian Gutekunst.
The contract for the 38-year-old Rodgers had been set to expire after the 2022-23 season. Rodgers and the Packers went 13-4 last season, earning the top seed and a playoff bye in the NFC. However, they were upset at home by the San Francisco 49ers, losing 13-10 in a game in which Rodgers threw for 225 yards and no touchdowns.
