Two streakers interrupt the Super Bowl during play in Las Vegas

Two idiots managed to briefly halt play during the Super Bowl in Las Vegas in a wild incident that is sure to prove extremely costly.

Two streakers ran onto the field and interrupted the play during the third quarter of this year’s Super Bowl between Kansas City and San Francisco.

After the Chiefs picked up two yards on a Patrick Mahomes pass to Mecole Hardman, CBS Sports colour commentator Tony Romo informed the more than 100 million people watching at home that there was a “partial streaker” on the field.

While television networks shy away from showing streakers on the field, a number of people in attendance at Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas shared videos on social media, as the New York Post reported.

The streakers did not make it very far before getting tackled by multiple security guards in a game the Chiefs would ultimately win 25-22 in overtime.

The two men, who were wearing pants and had messages painted on their shirtless bodies, were then escorted away from the field and are sure to face a date with law enforcement.

The game was also barely interrupted by the disruption, just for a matter of seconds.

It is unclear whether the streakers were advocating for a cause or merely over-exuberant revellers, but they did have hashtags painted on their torsos in black marker.

The incidents will likely prove very costly for the duo, with big fines, stadiums bans and even short prison sentences possible punishments.

Monday (AEDT) marked the third time in the Chiefs’ last four Super Bowl appearances that a streaker has run onto the field.

At Super Bowl 55 in Tampa in 2021, when the Chiefs were playing the Buccaneers, Florida native Yuri Andrade donned spandex and promoted an X-rated website with his streaking exploits.

The prior year, when the Chiefs beat the Niners in Super Bowl 54 in 2020, Instagram model Kelly Kay ran onto the field and was caught by security before she could strip.

The moment on Monday came during an action-packed game that also featured a bizarre and heartbreaking injury to San Francisco linebacker Dre Greenlaw in the same third quarter.

The 26-year-old was bouncing up and down on the sideline alongside some of his defensive teammates when he prepared to re-enter the fray after a punt return with just over nine minutes remaining in the second quarter.

Greenlaw planted his left foot just outside the field of play and pushed off to rejoin the action, when he collapsed in a heap and reached down to grab his leg.

The 49er was able to make it back to the sideline on his feet, but was ruled out of the contest almost immediately by a team doctor with a suspected ruptured Achilles tendon.

Greenlaw was then taken from the field on a cart in tears as his Super Bowl dream ended in devastating fashion.
