Prison authorities have slapped down a request from former NFL player Jarryd Hayne while he serves out his prison sentence.

The extent of Jarryd Hayne’s fall from grace can be personified by the huge Super Bowl game in Las Vegas on Monday (AEDT).

It’s an event Hayne once would’ve dreamt of playing in, now he’s unable to even watch it live.

The 35-year-old commenced the 2015 NFL season with the San Francisco 49ers, who faced Kansas City in this year’s extravaganza.

Hayne made eight appearances for the Niners, predominantly as a running back, before returning to the NRL.

The New South Welshman, who played the last of his 214 NRL matches in 2018, was convicted of rape in 2023 and sentence to four years, nine months in prison.

With the Super Bowl commencing at 10.30am AEDT on Monday, Hayne was required to undergo prison work and won’t get a pass from authorities to watch the game, according to The Daily Telegraph.

He will need to hope he can catch a replay on Channel 7, as inmates only have access to free-to-air television.

“On weekdays, inmates are required to participate in programs, training, education or work during the day,” a Corrective Services NSW spokeswoman said.

“Inmates can watch network television when in their cells during lock-in on TVs or inmate tablets.

“Inmates will be expected to attend regular activities on Monday.”

Hayne is a two-time Dally M medal winner from his time in rugby league, spent mostly with Parramatta along with two seasons with the Gold Coast Titans.

He also played 11 Test matches for Australia and made 23 appearances for the Blues in State of Origin.

Hayne was initially hit with rape charges in November 2018, which ended with a hung jury and a second trial, when he was found guilty.

That conviction was quashed on appeal, with a fresh trial ordered.

He was then convicted in April 2023, which he is appealing once more, set to face a hearing in the NSW Court of Criminal Appeal in April this year.

Hayne, who is eligible for parole in May 2025, has always maintained his innocence.

Hayne was also accused of raping a woman in the US in 2015, who filed a civil lawsuit, which was settled. Police elected not to pursue a criminal case.

In the match itself, Kansas City scored a touchdown in overtime to seal a 25-22 victory in an instant Super Bowl classic.
