The AFL legend has shied away from the limelight following a white powder incident that unfolded at a Perth casino in September last year.

On Friday the former North Melbourne and Adelaide player was spotted alongside some fellow greats of the game.

At an event in Bundalong, Carey was photographed alongside Brownlow Medal winner Dane Swan and former player agent Ricky Nixon.

Geelong great turned media personality Billy Brownless spoke about spending time with Carey at the event which was raising money for the Royal Children’s Hospital Good Friday Appeal.

“I caught up with an old mate and he said to say g’day,’’ Brownless said.

“He still looks good. He had a white shirt that was two sizes too small, then he had the nice strides and all that, but he had a knitted jumper on and he hadn’t read the email for the dress (code) at this function at a tavern. Everyone there has got footy shorts on and hoodies and RM Williams, he looked like a school teacher. He looked like a principal.

“He said a couple of funny ones here and there. All the best to our good friend Ducky boy who is going well.”

Attending the event alongside Carey was his new love interest Catie O’Neill, the pair went public via an Instagram story in March.

In a photo shared on the 28-year-old TikTok star’s page, the businesswoman appeared with a glass of wine in one hand while resting on the famous footballer.

The pair were first spotted together in Bundalong, where Carey was at an event to raise funds for “Outside the Locker Room”, a mental health education initiative.

They were also seen in Bali together, and with O’Neill keeping an active social media presence, look set to be seen together more often going forward.

The 51-year-old has kept a low public profile since last September, when he was evicted from Perth Crown casino after a bag of white powder was dropped on the gaming floor.

Carey considered legal action, engaging high profile solicitor Josh Bornstein, who also represented Essendon in their challenge to ASADA’s investigation of the supplements saga.

“Mr Carey was ejected after Casino authorities saw a bag containing a white substance and despite Mr Carey’s denial made an incorrect assumption that the bag contained an illegal drug,” Bornstein said in a statement.

“Mr Carey is prescribed anti-inflammatories and painkilling medicine to help manage the significant pain caused by debilitating football injuries – including a shoulder that needs replacing and a neck injury that requires three discs to be replaced,” he said.

The scandal resulted in Carey being stood down from his roles as a commentator with Channel 7, as well as roles with Triple M and writing commitments with The Age.

“Wayne has advised Seven that due to the media attention he and his family have received as a result of this incident, he doesn’t intend to do any media in 2023,” managing director of Seven Melbourne and head of network sport Lewis Martin said.

“We wish to thank Wayne for his service to Seven.”
