Who has been St Kevin’s Old Boys’ best VAFA player since the start of the century?
The proud VAFA club, known by everyone as SKOB, boasts a swag of former AFL players that have represented the club since 2000.
Mark Jamar (Melbourne/Essendon) and Jay Schulz (Port Adelaide/Richmond) are among them, but it is former West Coast Eagle Mitch Brown who arguably reached the greatest heights from the former professional ranks during his time with SKOB.
Brown turned up at the club at the end of 2016 after almost 100 games at West Coast, but he was unknown to at least one future teammate at his first training session with SKOB.
“Sam Cameron was his name and he was playing under-19’s,” Brown said.
“I was having a kick with him in my first session, and he asked me if I was trying to play with the ones this year or just settle with the reserves.
“I said something like ‘I might try and have a crack at the ones.’
“Then the training started and Shannon Grant was the coach at the time and introduced me to everyone and Sam goes ‘oh s….’”

When told he was No.1 on our list, Brown he replied with a laugh:
“I certainly don’t think I’m No.1 but I’ll take it.”
“I just really hold my time at SKOB close to my heart and it was a great time.
“I never had premiership success at AFL level or in juniors, so it was really special in 2017 and 2018 (when we won back-to-back premierships).
“I ended up playing OK footy because I loved playing with the boys down there and I had so much fun.
Brown said his time playing with SKOB was the perfect end to his days as a player.
“It’s not to say I didn’t love my time in the AFL with the Eagles, but with professional footy sometimes it can feel like a business,” Brown said.
“I also had a lot of injuries, so I loved my time at the Eagles but in VAFA you don’t worry about getting paid, you just rock up to games on a Saturday with guys who love to play footy.
“My love of footy was always there, but I think it helped me finish my footy life with that love of the game.”
Former Bomber Tom Jok and former Port Adelaide gun Steven Salopek have also played in multiple premierships with SKOB, while current senior coach and 278-gamer Anthony Lynch is very high on the list.
