TRADEHQ: LATEST NEWS AND WHISPERS
ADELAIDE
GONE: Nathan van Berlo, Matthew Jaensch (retired), Luke Lowden, Keenan Ramsey (delisted)
IN PLAY: Out-of-contract swingman Ricky Henderson is surplus to Adelaide’s needs and should find a new home during the trade period. Jarryd Lyons will test the market after not being happy with the offer on the table. The 24-year-old has been linked to Gold Coast.
THE TARGETS: Been sniffing around Carlton star Bryce Gibbs for a long time, but a move appears unlikely.
NATIONAL DRAFT PICKS: 13, 50, 68, 86, 104
BRISBANE LIONS
GONE: Justin Clarke, Trent West, Daniel Merrett (retired), Jackson Paine, Hugh Beasley, Billy Evans, Josh Watts, Josh McGuinness (delisted)
IN PLAY: Pearce Hanley appears to have out-stayed his welcome and could be off to cross-town rival Gold Coast or to Geelong. Captain Tom Rockliff’s name continues to come up in trade talks. How will his meeting with new coach Chris Fagan go?
THE TARGETS: Collingwood’s Jack Frost will head north on a three-year deal. The Lions are also keen on Melbourne defender Lynden Dunn.
NATIONAL DRAFT ORDER: 2, 19, 21, 29, 48, 57, 75
CARLTON
GONE: Matthew Dick, Jayden Foster, Clem Smith (delisted), Michael Jamison, Andrew Walker, Cameron Wood (retired)
IN PLAY: Zach Tuohy has baulked at a two-year deal, with North Melbourne and Geelong circling for his services.
THE TARGETS: Caleb Marchbank will get to the Blues, but at what price? The Blues will want to hold onto No.5, or at least secure a later first-round selection in return. Expect GWS to try and bundle in James Stewart with Marchbank in a direct swap for No.5. That would place seven former Giants on the Stephen Silvagni’s list.
NATIONAL DRAFT PICKS: 5, 24, 42, 55, 78, 96
COLLINGWOOD
GONE: Tim Golds, Matthew Goodyear, Darrean Wyatt (delisted), Brent Macaffer, Dane Swan, Alan Toovey (retired)
IN PLAY: Travis Cloke’s move to premiers Western Bulldogs appears a fait accompli and should go through relatively quickly. Jack Frost is set to sign with Brisbane, while Jarrod Witts is likely to join Gold Coast. Whisper is restricted free agent Nathan Brown will reject North Melbourne’s offer to stay put.
THE TARGETS: Have dangled big-money multi-year deals at free agents Chris Mayne and Daniel Wells and both should get done as a matter of course. Giant Will Hoskin-Elliott also been courted by the Pies promising greater playing prospects.
NATIONAL DRAFT PICKS: 26, 44, 62, 80, 98
ESSENDON
GONE: Jason Ashby, Ryan Crowley, Matt Dea, Shaun Edwards, Nathan Grima, Sam Grimley, James Gwilt, Mark Jamar, James Kelly, Sam Michael, James Polkinghorne, Jonathan Simpkin, Tom Wallis (delisted), Adam Cooney, Tayte Pears (retired)
IN PLAY: Michael Hibberd’s trade to Melbourne will get done with the cost likely to be second-round pick.
THE TARGETS: Bulldogs midfielder Koby Stevens remains unsigned and could make the switch to Tullamarine. Could look at contracted Brisbane Lions skipper Tom Rockliff should he decide to leave the Gabba for a fresh start.
NATIONAL DRAFT PICKS: 1, 20, 38, 56, 74, 92
FREMANTLE
GONE: Matthew Pavlich (retired), Sean Hurley, Tanner Smith, Anthony Morabito, Tendai Mzungu, Matt de Boer, Clancee Pearce, Jack Hannath, Brady Grey, Josh Deluca (delisted)
IN PLAY: After seven years out west, Michael Barlow is unlikely to remain a Docker. Hayden Ballantyne has been linked with a move to West Coast and will likely head east if a trade to the rival can’t be struck. Chris Mayne will join Collingwood.
THE TARGETS: Hawthorn’s Brad Hill is set to join brother Stephen at the Dockers, most likely at the cost of the compensation selection received for Mayne. After sitting out the 2016 season, Cam McCarthy is likely to return to football with Fremantle and the Dockers could also target fellow West Australian Shane Kersten. Interest is rising in premiership defender Joel Hamling, another local product.
NATIONAL DRAFT ORDER: 3, 40, 58, 76
GEELONG
GONE: Corey Enright (retired), Zac Bates, Cameron Delaney, Padraig Lucey, Tom Read, Jock Cornell (delisted)
IN PLAY: Steven Motlop is under pressure after a slim September campaign. Out-of-favour forward Shane Kersten has been linked with a move to Perth and Nathan Vardy could be another tall on the way out.
THE TARGETS: The Cats want to add another star midfielder and are targeting one of Brett Deledio, Daniel Wells or Pearce Hanley. Could Hayden Ballantyne slot into Geelong’s forward line?
NATIONAL DRAFT ORDER: 35, 39, 53, 71, 88, 89
GOLD COAST
GONE: Seb Tape, Luke Russell, Danny Stanley, Tom Keough (delisted)
IN PLAY: Jaeger O’Meara wants to head to Hawthorn and Dion Prestia has nominated Richmond. Will they end up there? The Suns will play hardball on O’Meara, but expect both trades to get done.
THE TARGETS: Who isn’t a target? It feels like the Suns are after anyone and everyone in this year’s trade period. Docker Michael Barlow could find himself on the Gold Coast and the Suns are still in the hunt for Pearce Hanley and Jarrod Witts. Missed out on Lin Jong and Hamish Hartlett.
NATIONAL DRAFT PICKS: 4, 8 (from Melbourne), 22 (from Fremantle), 23, 25 (from Richmond), 28 (from Port Adelaide), 41, 59
GWS GIANTS
GONE: None as yet
IN PLAY: Quite a few. Midfielder Jack Steele wants to play for St Kilda, Caleb Marchbank has requested a move to Carlton and homesick forward Cam McCarthy wants to head home to WA. Wingman Will Hoskin-Elliott is in Collingwood’s sights while James Stewart is likely to end up at the Magpies or Blues.
THE TARGETS: The Giants would love to snatch this year’s No.1 draft pick to secure Sandringham Dragons jet Andy McGrath in addition to another sparkling academy bunch, led by Will Setterfield and Harry Perryman.
NATIONAL DRAFT PICKS: 7 (from Collingwood), 15, 16 (from Geelong via Carlton), 32 (from Adelaide), 34, 52, 70
HAWTHORN
GONE: Shem-Kalvin Tatupu (retired)
IN PLAY: Brad Hill wants to play alongside brother Stephen at Fremantle and will likely net a draft pick in the early 20s. Luke Breust’s name has been raised as possible trade bait to help land slick midfielder Jaeger O’Meara. Premiership player Will Langford could also be on the move while clubs are talking about promising forward James Sicily. Promising defender Kaiden Brand should re-sign.
THE TARGETS: Blockbuster trade period coming up with deals to be done for Jaeger O’Meara and Tom Mitchell. Ty Vickery, a restricted free agent, will join the Hawks on a two-year deal worth close to $1m, as long as Richmond doesn’t match the offer.
NATIONAL DRAFT PICKS: 14, 33, 51, 69, 87, 105
MELBOURNE
GONE: Jack Grimes, Matt Jones, Dean Terlich (delisted)
IN PLAY: Chris Dawes is yet to receive a fresh contract offer while Lynden Dunn is tipped to join Brisbane Lions after falling out of favour.
THE TARGETS: Michael Hibberd is the man and is expected to only cost pick No.27, delivering a lean draft year for the Demons. A back-up ruckman to Gawn is also on the wish list.
NATIONAL DRAFT PICKS: 27, 45, 63, 81
NORTH MELBOURNE
GONE: Nick Dal Santo, Drew Petrie, Robbie Nahas, Farren Ray, Brent Harvey, Michael Firrito (retired)
IN PLAY: Daniel Wells looks to be on the move to Collingwood on a three-year mega deal. Brad McKenzie and Joel Tippett might struggle to hold their spots on the list with no contracts on the table.
THE TARGETS: The Roos have trumped Carlton with a four-year deal to lure Zach Tuohy, yet to sign a three-year deal to stay at Princes Park. North has its eye on young Crows forward Harry Dear. They also want Collingwood key defender Nathan Brown.
NATIONAL DRAFT PICKS: 11, 30, 66, 84, 102
PORT ADELAIDE
GONE: Alipate Carlile (retired), John Butcher, Jay Schulz, Kane Mitchell, Sam Colquhoun (delisted)
IN PLAY: The Hamish Hartlett saga is set to fizzle with the expensive midfielder now likely to stay. Matthew Lobbe’s value has gone through the floor while unsigned defender Cameron O’Shea is also on the market. Lobbe is rated a 50-50 chance to stay with Paddy Ryder set to take the No.1 ruck mantle.
THE TARGETS: A salary cap squeeze means the draft is likely to be the main target for the Power. Ryder and Angus Monfries are effectively 2017 recruits after serving drug bans.
NATIONAL DRAFT PICKS: 9, 46, 64, 82
RICHMOND
GONE: Troy Chaplin, Reece McKenzie (retired), Liam McBean, Adam Marcon (delisted)
IN PLAY: The Brett Deledio trade talk refuses to go away with Geelong keen on the star Tiger. Richmond is unlikely to match Tyrone Vickery’s free agency offer from Hawthorn. Ben Lennon requested a trade as soon as the season was over. Reece Conca is also likely to find a second home.
THE TARGETS: Dion Prestia will be at Tigerland next year. The only question is, how much will he cost? Tigers would love to find a way to land Prestia and hold onto pick No.6, and Deledio could be the answer.
NATIONAL DRAFT ORDER: 6, 43, 61, 79
ST KILDA
GONE: Luke Delaney, Tom Curren, Josh Saunders, Brenton Payne (delisted)
IN PLAY: St Kilda has plenty of ruck depth and rival clubs have enquired about Billy Longer. The club says he is a required player.
THE TARGETS: The Saints have already had a win with GWS midfielder Jack Steele declaring he wants to join the club. Don’t rule out another inside midfielder lobbing at Seaford.
NATIONAL DRAFT ORDER: 10, 47, 65, 83
SYDNEY SWANS
GONE: Ted Richards, Ben McGlynn (retired), Tom Derickx, Kyle Galloway (delisted)
IN PLAY: The big one is Tom Mitchell, who is set to declare his intentions on Monday. Hawthorn looms large, but the Swans won’t let him go without a fight. Ruckman Toby Nankervis may also head to Richmond.
THE TARGETS: The Swans don’t need a whole lot, but they surely would love to get up the draft order given their first pick is at 17. Swans are also having a look at Zach Tuohy.
NATIONAL DRAFT PICKS: 17, 36, 54, 90
WEST COAST
GONE: Xavier Ellis, Damien Cavka, Kane Lucas, Patrick McGinnity (retired), Jamie Bennell, Brant Colledge, Alec Waterman, Corey Adamson (delisted)
IN PLAY: Key defender Eric Mackenzie is on Essendon’s radar where he would link up with former coach John Worsfold. Mitch Brown looks likely to leave in free agency.
THE TARGETS: With Nic Naitanui set for a long stint on the sidelines, the Eagles are chasing delisted Roo Drew Petrie. Would they take a look at Will Minson? Fremantle forward Hayden Ballantyne could also make the switch to the Eagles.
NATIONAL DRAFT ORDER: 12, 31, 49, 67, 85
WESTERN BULLDOGS
GONE: Jed Adcock (retired), Luke Goetz (delisted)
IN PLAY: Premiership defender Joel Hamling remains unsigned as his value rockets. Midfielder Koby Stevens looks set to leave, as does uncontracted small forward Nathan Hrovat. Will Minson retired from the club but would go another season elsewhere, while All-Australian Matthew Boyd’s future remains unclear.
THE TARGETS: The Travis Cloke trade should be fairly straight-forward. He is expected to cost the Dogs just pick No.72, with Collingwood happy to free up salary cap space by offloading their hulking goalkicker. Other than that expect a quiet October, with the Dogs’ list strategy now geared around retention.
NATIONAL DRAFT PICKS: 18, 37, 55 (from Carlton), 60, 72 (from Sydney), 73
