The Score: Max Gawn shows off his cycling skills while Tim Paine has a message for the Australian selectors

YOU’D think basketball would be the sport Max Gawn would be best suited away from the AFL arena. Think again.

YOU’D think basketball rather than cycling would be the sport Max Gawn would be best suited away from the AFL arena.

But the 208cm Melbourne ruckman showed on the weekend that he’s a gifted member of the peloton.

Gawn joined forces with radio jock and long-time Demons supporter, Hamish Blake, to take on the Peaks Challenge at Cradle Mountain in Tasmania.

This is a ride not for the faint-hearted with experts describing it as Tour de France-like.

The climb is 4000m plus over 235km with the novice cyclists given a 13-hour deadline.

While Gawn doesn’t do a lot of road cycling, his reputation in the saddle has been forged from his work in the Demons gym on the Wattbikes where his power ratio is apparently off the charts.

It’s been a good few days for the All-Australian ruckman who also tipped the Melbourne Cup winner Almandin.

Gawn, who is a keen punter and was at Flemington on Tuesday, declared the Lloyd Williams horse the one to beat several weeks ago.

SPORTS journo Courtney Walsh has become used to it.

When the calendar clicks over to October 30 his Twitter account explodes.

The reason?

It’s the birthday of his namesake, West Indian cricket great Courtney Walsh, with hundreds of messages from all over the world swamping the Australian journalist’s Twitter feed to celebrate the milestone.

The former West Indian captain turned 54 on Sunday and it appears he is yet to embrace the new world of social media.

FORGET about the back tees, golfers will be teeing off from the rooftop of a villa during this week’s European Tour event, the Turkish Airlines Open.

When players get to the par-4 16th hole at the Regnum Carya Golf Resort they will climb a specially constructed set of stairs that lead on to the roof of one of the villas that surround the course and play their tee shot.

The drive will play over the villa pool below, across a hedge separating the villa and the golf course, across the proper tees, across a lake and hopefully onto the fairway.

Maybe this was the reason for Tiger Woods’ withdrawal from the tournament given they way he’s hitting them the pool could have well and truly been in play.

THE TWEET

A not-too-subtle dig at Australia’s chairman of selectors Rod Marsh by Tasmanian keeper Tim Paine concerning his teammate Jackson Bird who despite being in brilliant form with the ball wasn’t selected in the First Test squad because of his batting.

THE WHISPER

With Andrew Demetriou a late scratching, Melbourne media manager Ryan Larkin will fly the AFL flag at Sunday’s New York Marathon.
