THE return of the Flying Dutchman, BT’s underdog fever and footballers catching falling puppies.

Here are the highs and lows of footy commentary in round 6.

THE HIGHS AND LOWS OF ROUND 5 COMMENTARY

Tell us your commentary highs and lows in the comments section below.

BT catches underdog fever

SOMETIMES Channel 7’s Brian Taylor is so excited about what might happen in a game, he forgets what’s actually happening.

Taylor was so thrilled by the possibility of Hawthorn completing a stirring 50-point comeback against North Melbourne in round 5, he had to continually check on the excitement levels of co-commentator Cameron Ling whenever the Hawks scored.

“On-board now, Lingy?”

It must’ve been deflating when he was forced to concede time and the Kangaroos had thwarted his comeback fantasy.

Taylor was similarly hopeful about Carlton’s prospects of overhauling the Bulldogs on Friday night.

And he remained unperturbed with Collingwood 19 points down to Richmond late in the final term on Sunday.

The Magpies were carrying two injured players and a surging Richmond had kicked 5 of the last 7 goals, but Taylor didn’t read the tea leaves.

Don’t go make a cup of tea, this game is right on.

Just seconds after Taylor once again talked up the Pies chances, Dustin Martin ran into an open goal.

We all like an underdog, but probably not as much as Taylor thinks we do.

Hurley Haar-dly recognisable

TAYLOR is an exciting caller when in full flight, but accurately identifying players can sometimes be a bridge too far.

Taylor mistook Essendon defender Michael Hurley for former Bomber Paul Vander Haar on Anzac Day.

Yes, both are classy, blond defenders, but Vander Haar retired 28 years ago.

Bob’s Bloods

SEN’S Bob Murphy wins the crystal ball award for the week.

“This could be one of those weekends where the Swans turn into the Bloods,” he said on the station’s Saturday morning show Crunch Time.

The undermanned Swans went on to record a gutsy against-the-odds victory against Geelong in the Kardinia Park cauldron.

Bloods indeed.

We’ll take your word for it, Dwayne

FOX Footy’s Dwayne Russell offered this to describe Tim Kelly’s clever mark against Sydney:

“Good grab, protected the drop zone and cradled it, like a puppy from a burning building.”

Never before has the football fan been asked to contemplate puppies plunging from a towering inferno.

After channelling Beyonce during his round 5 call, we wait with interest to see where Russell will take us next week.

The famous old dark blues

SEN’S Danny Frawley loved the Demons clash strip in the build-up to Sunday’s game against Essendon.

The Demons substituted in royal blue for the usual navy blue underneath the red diamond on their jumpers.

Though Frawley wondered whether the lack of dark blue would mean a change in the club song?

It was up to a co-commentator to point out that Carlton — not Melbourne — sang the old dark navy blues.

Shanks a lot

“YOU just get the feeling this kid loves Friday night footy and he’ll love the big moment. He always kicks through the footy hard.”

Channel 7’s Wayne Carey doomed Carlton fans when he gushed about Charlie Curnow as he lined up for goal from 15m out.

Curnow went on to spray the shot horribly.

“He’s actually shanked that.”

Thanks for that Duck.
