THE manager of star West Coast defender Jeremy McGovern has confirmed the free agent has received a huge offer to leave the Eagles.

The Herald Sun this week revealed the dual All-Australian defender was being tempted by a Melbourne-based club offering a six-year deal worth more than $7 million.

Eagles coach Adam Simpson said his club was “doing everything” to keep McGovern, but he won’t come cheap.

McGovern’s manager Colin Young on Friday used Richmond premiership defender Alex Rance as an example of the money being spoken.

“Rancey, I don’t know what he’s on ... his style of player might be worth between $1 million and $1.5 million now, so does Jeremy McGovern fit into that?” Young said.

“He plays not dissimilar to Rancey. So if that helps you, there’s certainly offers on the table and certainly those figures aren’t too far away.”

Simpson said the Eagles were determined to hang on to a player who took the most contested marks in the AFL last year and has led the competition for intercept marks per game in each of the past two seasons.

“We know he’s an A-grade talent, he’s a dual All-Australian, so we’re doing everything we can to try and keep him here,” Simpson said.

“I don’t think it’s about the sell. He knows what we’re about and what we’re like. (But) I won’t be running this through the media every week.”

Young, speaking on SEN, said McGovern had a big decision to make.

“Jeremy does love the coach, he does love the players and he does love the club so it’s going to be a cautious decision whether he stays or go.

“At this moment, he’s with the club for this year. He wants to play in a flag this year, he wants to have success, so with all those ingredients plus the offers that may come from Melbourne — and there’s no doubt there is (interest).

“You never say never, but he’s pretty happy at West Coast. The market value is going to dictate what he’s worth.”

Young said the football world needed to mature in its approach to player movement, adding that players shouldn’t be scared of telling their clubs of their intentions.

“That’s got to happen. For clubs to plan they need to know. I’m happy to tell a club so they can plan ... I have no issue talking about that,” he said.
