RICHMOND has confirmed the season of defender Steven Morris is over with a ruptured anterior cruciate ligament.
Scans on Sunday confirmed the worst for the 27-year-old, who the club said would undergo surgery in the “coming weeks”.
Morris injured his knee in the first quarter of last Friday night’s heavy 70-point loss to North Melbourne in Hobart.
“The injury is disappointing for Steve, he’s a tough competitor and been playing great football this season,” Tigers’ general manager of football Dan Richardson said.
“It’s never easy to see a player go down with a long-term injury, but Steve is a resilient person and we’ll support him throughout the rehab process.”
The Tigers also confirmed forward Ben Griffiths has a lateral ligament sprain in his right ankle, with the club to assess his recovery during the week.
Richmond said defender Dylan Grimes, a late withdrawal after suffering hamstring tightness in the warm-up against North, will have to train fully this week to prove his fitness for Sunday’s clash against Gold Coast at the MCG.
Nick Vlastuin will also need to pass concussion tests this week to be cleared to play.
Meanwhile, Essendon veteran Ryan Crowley is set to face a stint on the sidelines after injuring his hamstring late in Saturday night’s heavy loss to Fremantle at Subiaco.
Essendon coach John Worsfold said after the game that he expected Crowley’s injury to keep him out for a minimum of three weeks.
“It didn’t look too good,’’ Worsfold said.
“You’d guess with what it looked like it would be a minimum of three weeks’ out.
“Hamstring’s can go up into the tendon which means six or eight weeks out like (Jonathan) Simpkin’s was, but hopefully it’s at the lower end.’’
