Growing up as a Richmond fan, Max Gawn idolised lesser-lights Clinton King and Ray Hall.

Now the AFL’s premier ruckman, who features in this year’s Herald Sun Footy 19 magazine, tells us his favourite four current players from across the land.

MATTHEW SUCKLING (Western Bulldogs)

“I am purely impressed at how he can kick the footy. He drops the ball from behind him and manages to kick it and laces out people 70m away on a 90-degree angle. It’s an incredible kick and I hope he does go on to NFL afterwards because I reckon he could be a talent.”

LEVI CASBOULT (Carlton)

“I love a contested-marking forward. Levi was in the final three for mark of the year once and unfortunately it went to a high-flying one, but he took it with 17 guys in the pack — it was like a jack in the pack from Year 10 — and he was the last one in the pack, and he managed to clunk it. He has the best hands in the business when he’s going.”

STEVEN MAY (Melbourne)

“As a junior kid there’s that really big kid who is a lot bigger than everyone else but can’t really play footy. Well, Steven can play footy, but this was the kid you just put at full-back and said be really aggressive and tackle everyone as hard as you can. We had a kid like that in our junior team and we said go to full-back and make sure no one scores. He broke people’s arms. Steven May plays footy the way footy was back when you were a junior. A really aggressive full-back and you love watching that.”

Herald Sun's Footy19 magazine is out from March 2

AARON SANDILANDS (Fremantle)

“I remember going into a game against Freo at the end of 2015 and one of the coaches came up to me and said, ‘Now, we know he’s a big boy. But run him around the ground’. Sandilands is one of the fittest ruckmen in the competition. He ran me around.”
