Dayne Beams exposes disgusting online attack from troll targeting his late father

Dayne Beams has taken to Instagram to reveal a “disgusting” online attack that underlines the depths online trolls will go when abusing AFL players.

Dayne Beams said his life “spiralled out of control” after the death of his father.

Magpie premiership star Dayne Beams has called out an Instagram troll after an online exchange that started with a gibe about betting.

Beams expressed his disgust with the online harassment in a post on Tuesday night.

Collingwood refused to comment when contacted yesterday.

Beams is recovering from hip surgery and is in a race against time to be fit by finals.

The Instagram user who taunted Beams started the exchange with the post: “U wanna have a bet this weekend mate”.

The user also wrote an offensive line relating to Beams’ father.

Beams’ dad, Phillip, died in March last year after a battle with bowel cancer.

Beams called out the troll by writing: “Why should players just have to put up with this s---.

“It’s disgusting some of the abuse players cop.”

The Magpie redacted his responses to the online user in the post.

Beams last year said his life “spiralled out of control” after the death of his father. He made a move back to Collingwood from the Brisbane Lions at the end of last season.

Former Blue and Sun Daniel Gorringe backed Beams on Twitter.

“Wtf is wrong with people? This has to stop … Take a look at yourself,” he wrote.

While the Herald Sun is not suggesting Beams bets, there are fears of a gambling epidemic in the AFL.

Magpie forward Jaidyn Stephenson is serving a 10-week ban after admitting placing three bets worth $36 on games involving Collingwood.

The Herald Sun revealed on June 7 gambling counsellor Jan Beames’ concerns that up to 120 players and coaches had gambling addictions or chronic issues.

In the wake of the Stephenson suspension, Magpie president Eddie McGuire raised the idea of an amnesty for players betting on football.

McGuire said he feared for players who “get themselves into trouble with organised crime by betting outside of football and racking up massive debts, which are then forced to be paid off by doing something on a football ground”.

Beams has joined a growing trend of players outing online trolls, with a number of indigenous stars doing so in the wake of a concerted decision to bring the vitriol to light.

West Coast forward Liam Ryan, Hawk star Shaun Burgoyne and Power tower Paddy Ryder have all outed online hate, as have Eagle Nic Naitanui and Hawthorn’s Jarryd Roughead, who was attacked over his own battle with cancer.

Richmond acted decisively by banning for two years a member who posted a racist taunt about Ryan on social media.

Earlier this season the Demons ripped apart hateful tweets sent to their players as they entered the MCG as part of an anti-bullying campaign.

At the time Neville Jetta said he hoped the club’s campaign would change attitudes among Australia’s younger generation.

“It’s not just racism, it’s actually bullying, bullying people, and AFL players have that stance where we’re able to speak out to the community and people actually listen to us,” he told Fox Sports’ AFL 360 program
