Collingwood coach Nathan Buckley says Channel 7’s ‘Phil Inn’ injury graphic was ‘slapstick broadcasting’

Nathan Buckley has accused Channel 7 of “slapstick broadcasting” during an appearance on the network after he was asked about injured midfielder Brayden Sier’s local basketball cameo.

Collingwood coach Nathan Buckley has bristled at a Channel 7 graphic which featured Brayden Sier’s basketball pseudonym ‘Phil Inn’ during Friday night’s television coverage.

During a predominantly jovial appearance on Channel 7’s Talking Footy, Buckley was in no mood for laughing when referring to a graphic which featured the Magpies’ unavailable players.

Under the heading ‘Who’s Missing’, Dayne Beams, Jordan De Goey, Steele Sidebottom and Jaidyn Stephenson were joined by the fictitious name Sier played under during a recent Diamond Valley Basketball Association Division 3 match.

Asked whether he could see the lighter side of Sier’s local basketball cameo, Buckley said: “No. There wasn’t a lot of humour in that. Channel 7, your station, your employer, thought it was a good idea to put Phil Inn in the missing players.”

Buckley was then asked by host Luke Darcy, “did you appreciate that, or not?”

He replied with: “So, we are now slapstick broadcasting.”

Darcy then conceded that “maybe we think we are funnier than we are as well.”

Buckley jumped to the defence of Sier, who avoided a club suspension.

“Brayden is a young player who is still learning what it takes at the AFL level,” he said.

“He has the talent to play, there’s no doubt. As most listed AFL players do. But it takes more than talent.

“He has worked hard at different times to earn his opportunities and we think he has got a lot of growth in him.

“I don’t reckon there’s a player that has played that hasn’t made a blue periodically. It’s just that they are laid particularly bare in today’s social media environment.”
