BRISBANE will be hit by the shock resignation of list chief Peter Schwab.

The highly respected talent boss is set to accept a position with the AFL.

The Herald Sun can reveal the league has headhunted Schwab to be the new boss of its umpiring department.

DRAFT REVIEW: LIONS, SUNS NAIL DRAFT TO SECURE FUTURE

Schwab’s departure is expected to be confirmed this week. It is understood the league has been eyeing him for several months.

Brisbane chief executive Greg Swann today said he was aware Schwab was assessing his options about a job with the AFL.

“We are aware of the approach (from the AFL). Whilst we would be disappointed to lose Peter, we understand that it could be a good opportunity for him.

“We will wait and see what happens”

The move is a major blow for the Lions as they continue their list overhaul under new coach Chris Fagan and football boss David Noble.

Schwab is well respected in AFL circles and has worked hard to recontract the Lions’ prize youngsters despite their poor on field performance and some hit and miss draft picks.

The appointment of welfare boss Craig Lambert also caused some agitation in the Lions’ football department 12 months ago.

Since arriving at Brisbane, new football boss Noble has been assessing all parts of the Lions’ football operations.

It is expected Noble is keen to make key changes after a thorough AFL review of the club late this season.

Schwab’s exit means, after finding a new coach and football boss, this embattled club will have to search the market place for a new list boss to manage player contracts and recruiting.

However, the AFL is understood to be thrilled to land Schwab to manage the umpiring department and oversee some delicate rule reassessments.
