Brisbane Lions star Charlie Cameron subjected to vile, racial abuse

One of the Brisbane Lions’ best players has been racially abused in a “cowardly” attack on social media.

One of the Brisbane Lions’ best players has been racially abused in a “cowardly” attack on social media.

The Brisbane Lions revealed late on Tuesday night that Charlie Cameron was subjected to “vile, racist remarks” on social media over the weekend.

Cameron kicked six goals last Thursday against Collingwood in the teams best win of the season.

Brisbane Lions CEO Greg Swann said he was angry about the incident and called for a strong stance to be taken against those who level abuse at players.

“I’m angry and disappointed that Charlie, and we as a footy Club as well as an industry, have to constantly deal with this. I’m bewildered it continues to happen,” he said.

“It’s cowardly behaviour, hiding behind social media and abusing and attacking our players.

“We have reported the incident to the AFL Integrity Unit and beyond this statement, we want to take a strong stance against this happening and support any repercussions that the perpetrator may face.”

In a statement the club encouraged anyone who sees the vile remarks to call people out on it.

“At the Lions we are a family and when one hurts, we all hurt,” they said.

“This behaviour was called out by a Lions supporter who saw the remarks on social media and we encourage everyone to continue to call out unacceptable behaviour like this.

“If you see something, say something.”

The abuse towards Cameron follows Adelaide Crows gun Izak Rankine being racially vilified on Instagram after his team beat Fremantle on Saturday.

The Crows have also informed the AFL’s Integrity Unit about the abuse.

AFL CEO Gillon McLachlan condemned the abuse towards the players.

“This has to stop. It not only hurts the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander players targeted but all Indigenous players and players of colour across the league as well as their families, their team-mates and friends,” he said.

“We strongly support all our players and condemn the racial vilification of anyone in football and anyone in the wider community.

“The AFL wants to make clear, there is no place in our game for anyone who vilifies our players.”
