AFL Teams: All the ins and outs for round 4 of the 2022 season

The depleted Western Bulldogs’ defence will have its work cut out against Richmond’s tall timber. Luke Beveridge has put the onus on his smaller stoppers to stand up. ROUND FOUR TEAMS

Luke Beveridge will bank on the size of the fight in his Dogs to conquer Richmond’s “land of the giants” at the MCG on Saturday night.

Alex Keath (hamstring) and Zaine Cordy (concussion) are the Western Bulldogs’ latest tall timber cut down by injury, paving the way for ex-Hawk Tim O’Brien to make his club debut.

The Tigers selected eight players standing at least 192cm compared to the Bulldogs’ seven, with five of those standing 196cm or taller, but that’s only part of the story.

Ryan Gardner, O’Brien, Jamarra Ugle-Hagan and Aaron Naughton are the Dogs’ only key-position players in that group, while Tim English will go head-to-head in the ruck with Toby Nankervis.

Tall midfielders Marcus Bontempelli, Jack Macrae and Josh Dunkley will provide support but Beveridge said medium-sized defenders Bailey Williams, Bailey Dale, Ed Richards and Taylor Duryea must step up.

“It would have exacerbated it a little bit more if they kept Ivan Soldo in the team as well,” Beveridge said.

“On paper, there’s a theoretical advantage (for Richmond) in the air, so we’ll need pressure on the footy and to have wise heads going inside our 50, and make sure that we’re finding our teammates in space to advantage.”

The Tigers lost co-captain Dylan Grimes (hamstring) – replacing him with Ben Miller – but regained star duo Jack Riewoldt and Dion Prestia as they try to level their win-loss ledger and dump the Dogs in a 1-3 hole.

Beveridge’s men were favoured in their past two meetings with Richmond but went down both times, something he is well aware of.

“Backs to the wall, there are not many teams or clubs better in the competition,” he said.

“Our challenge will be to find that intensity that’s going to at least be able to match the ‘Tiges’ at the start of the game and be ready for an arm wrestle.”

Beveridge confirmed Bontempelli (shoulder/ankle) was good to go thanks to the nine-day break between games and that Tom Liberatore would receive more midfield time as his match fitness increased.

There were also encouraging signs in the past fortnight from No.1 draft pick Ugle-Hagan, but his coach refuted suggestions Richmond’s defence was ripe for the picking without Grimes.

“The challenge is more going to be for our medium-smalls and how we play that aerial part of the game, where we need the boys to compete in the air and at least bring some of those balls to ground,” Beveridge said.

“I think Aaron and Marra will do that reasonably well (but) I don’t anticipate that this Richmond backline is in any sort of state that we’re just going to rip them apart.

“There’s some very, very good players down there, but hopefully we get enough supply to give ourselves a chance in the first instance.”

Struggling Dons gutted by injury, Covid

Star forward Jake Stringer has been ruled out for Essendon as it gears up to face Adelaide, with the Dons also hit by injury to defender James Stewart.

Stringer suffered a hamstring injury, while Stewart has a calf complaint.

Fellow defender Tom Cutler is also out of the clash with the Crows after entering Covid protocols.

In better news for the Bombers, they will see Brandon Zerk-Thatcher, Alec Waterman and Will Snelling in the red sash for the first time this season.

Boom youngster Jack Hayes has been dumped by the Saints as they decide to go with twin towers Paddy Ryder and Rowan Marshall.

Another Blue out under Covid rules

Carlton has lost another player to Covid protocols with Corey Durdin forced out of the clash against Gold Coast.

The small forward is the latest Blue to enter the AFL’s Health and Safety protocols following Adam Cerra, Jack Martin and Adam Saad in the first three rounds.

Saad missed last week’s win against Hawthorn but returns to face the Suns.

Durdin, along with Blues VFL players Jack Carroll, Jesse Motlop and Tom Williamson, will be out of isolation early next week.

Carlton added Lachie Fogarty, Jack Newnes and Paddy Dow to its squad for round 4.

Elsewhere, Jack Riewoldt and Dion Prestia are back for Richmond along with defender Ben Miller, replacing the injured Dylan Grimes and three axings – Ivan Soldo, Jake Aarts and Jack Ross.

The Bulldogs have made three changes for their Saturday night clash against the Tigers, losing Zaine Cordy and Alex Keath to injury and dropping Roarke Smith. Tim O’Brien will play his first game for the club and Louis Butler and Bailey Williams are also in.

Collingwood has named defender Tom Wilson and Callum Brown to replace Jordan De Goey (suspension) and Taylor Adams (health and safety protocols), while Hawk Jarman Impey will play his first game for the year against St Kilda, but Chad Wingard is out injured.

In other teams news, Rory Sloane and Tex Walker are back for Adelaide, North Melbourne regains Luke Davies-Uniacke, Sean Darcy and David Mundy return for the Dockers and West Coast has made another four changes, regaining Tom Barrass and Willie Rioli but losing Jack Petruccelle to Covid protocols.

On Wednesday, Melbourne welcomed back gun intercept defender Jake Lever as it heads to Adelaide to try to heap more pain on the 0-3 Power.

Port omitted Sam Skinner and Martin Frederick, with defender Tom Clurey coming in to the side.
