BRYCE Gibbs is staying at Carlton after Adelaide failed to secure a deal in the final hours of the AFL trade period.

The Blues today steadfastly rejected the Crows’ offer — said to be first-round draft pick No. 13 — for the contracted midfielder.

Gibbs, 27, sought a trade to the Crows for personal reasons despite still having three years to serve on a five-season contract signed in June 2014.

The 209-game Gibbs was Adelaide’s prime target in this trade period, in which the Crows needed to find midfield speed and depth to support All-Australian vice-captain Rory Sloane.

Gibbs’ manager Nigel Carmody left Etihad Stadium saying Adelaide’s offer was “more than fair and reasonable” compared with other deals made in this trade period.

“Unfortunately the clubs could not see eye-to-eye on a deal,” Carmody said.

“Bryce will now look to have a great season with Carlton next year. To not get to Adelaide is disappointing but we move on.”

Adelaide list manager Justin Reid did not dismiss revisiting the Gibbs trade next year.

“Bryce is a contracted player and Carlton held him to that - and that is where it is left,” Reid said.

“Our offer was fair and equitable.

“Both clubs were well aware of Bryce and his family’s desire to return home, coupled with the fact he is also contracted to Carlton for a further three years.

“He is a quality player and person but like in all trades, there has to be ‘fair value’ for both parties.

“We do not believe that would have been the case if we were to hand over at least two first-round draft picks or a combination of players, who are crucial to our short and long term success, as was requested.

“Taking into account a large number of factors, we decided that proceeding with such an arrangement would have been irresponsible list management.”

Carlton football chief Andrew McKay declared: “Adelaide was not able to come to the level required to exchange Bryce Gibbs”.

“We were honest with Adelaide right from the word go - and honest with Bryce Gibbs and his manager,” McKay said.

“Adelaide was not able to get to that level (needed to close the deal).

“We look forward to Bryce wearing the navy blue jumper next year.

“Bryce loves the Carlton Football Club. He has no beef with the Carlton Football Club.”

Adelaide earlier reduced its midfield depth by trading uncontracted midfielder Jarryd Lyons to Gold Coast.

Port Adelaide closed the trade period with a late deal with Sydney on draft picks.
