Mitch Brown has left the Eagles after nine seasons.

BRISBANE Lions midfielder Jaden McGrath has walked away from football with two years still to run on his contract.

McGrath, 20, has battled injury throughout his two-year career at the Gabba after playing the first three games of the 2015.

The young midfielder failed to add to that tally after suffering from stress reactions in the navicular bone in his foot.

McGrath was contracted to the Lions until the end of the 2018 season but told the club his injuries combined with losing the passion to play in the AFL meant he wanted to be released from the deal.

“It’s a difficult choice to make but I want to be honest with myself and with the Club – and I just don’t have the desire to continue at the elite level,” McGrath said.

“Football is something I love and I want to get back to a place where I can enjoy the game again.

“I’d like to thank my family and friends for all their support, and the Club for giving me an opportunity to have a crack at AFL footy.”

McGrath was drafted with pick No.73 in the 2014 national draft.

New football boss David Noble said the Lions respect the midfielder’s decision.

“We really appreciate Jaden’s honesty and as a club we are committed to support him as he settles into life outside football,” he said.

The news comes ahead of the AFL’s second list lodgement deadline, with Adelaide also announcing Sam Shaw has retired from the game.

The 25-year-old battled concussion issues this year after an injury sustained while playing in the SANFL.

“I would like to thank the Adelaide Football Club for allowing me to live out a lifelong dream to play AFL and for their support during what has been a difficult time personally through injury,” Shaw said.

“I am extremely grateful particularly but not limited to Dr. Andrew Potter and the entire medical team.

“The last seven years at the club have provided me with amazing opportunities and exposure to so many great people, who enable the club to run on a daily basis and have also helped shape me into the person I am today.”
