SuperCoach: Who starred and who flopped in Round 13?

LIAM Jones’ rebirth is a great footy story, but it hurt a lot of SuperCoach players at the weekend. But it was a different story if you had Bryce Gibbs. Who starred and who flopped in Round 13?

REJOICE — the byes are over.

And the third week was the most painful of the lot for many SuperCoaches.

Popular picks Tom Lynch, Tom Rockliff, Dayne Beams and a bunch of Bulldogs were well down. But it wasn’t all bad news.

CATS STUDS: Thank you, Patrick Dangerfield. Putting the VC on Danger gave plenty of SuperCoaches the perfect start to the weekend after he scored a game-high 141 (282 as skipper). Mitch Duncan and Cam Guthrie were the only other two Cats over 100.

CATS DUDS: He’s a modern champion but Joel Selwood is still gettable by taggers, as Levi Greenwood and now Mark Hutchings have proved this year, restricting the Cats captain to 73 points. It was a bad night for the Selwood family with Scott finishing on the bench with a sore hamstring and 44 points. Nakia Cockatoo fared even worse, going down hurt in the first quarter — at least he kicked a goal before putting the tracksuit on.

EAGLES STUDS: There was a bit of hype around Dom Sheed during the pre-season. It might have taken a while but he’s living up to it with scores of 107 and 127 in his past two games. Nathan Vardy, Sam Mitchell and Andrew Gaff all topped 120 with Elliot Yeo and Luke Shuey not far behind.

EAGLES DUDS: Jackson Nelson (16) was hurt and Mark Hutchings (25) tagging, but no such excuses for Mark LeCras who scored 46 and is averaging just 65 for the year.

ST KILDA 89 d NORTH MELBOURNE 72

SAINTS STUDS: Is Seb Ross the most underrated premium in the comp? He has a lowest score of 94 in his past eight games and is in 0.6 per cent of teams. He topped the Saints’ scores on Friday night with 120, just pipping Dylan Roberton — another great point of difference. Tim Membrey’s 114 was his highest score of the year and Jack Billings scored his fifth ton from his past six games — he would have been a smart swap from Marcus Bontempelli a month ago.

SAINTS DUDS: Billy Longer could lose his spot to Tom Hickey after a 21. Not many other poor scores but Jack Steven scored 84 and is averaging 75 in his past three — not ideal if he’s one of your superstar midfielders.

KANGAROOS STUDS: Goldy is back. Todd Goldstein is reasserting himself as the competition’s No. 1 ruckman with a 128, giving him an average of 112 over his past five games. Sam Gibson and Ben Cunnington also hit three figures.

KANGAROOS DUDS: Ben Brown had a stinker with a capital S, spending much of the night in negative points before a late goal boosted his final tally to 12. Jed Anderson didn’t get a disposal in the first half and finished with 36.

SYDNEY 80 d RICHMOND 71

SWANS STUDS: How about Josh Kennedy’s last quarter? He had 37 points at the final change but an 11-disposal quarter inspired the Swans and lifted his SuperCoach score to 104. Tom Papley topscored for Sydney with 118 while popular picks Isaac Heeney, Nic Newman and Jake Lloyd also scored over 100.

SWANS DUDS: Just 23 from Dean Towers and 37 from Harry Marsh; there’s a reason they aren’t popular picks in SuperCoach. A 48 from Lance Franklin was a lot more painful.

TIGERS STUDS: Speaking of last-quarter surges, Alex Rance went from 10 SuperCoach points at halftime to 109 after the siren. Bachar Houli’s 129 was the highest score at the MCG while Dustin Martin and Trent Cotchin posted centuries despite not having their best days.

TIGERS DUDS: Hopefully you’ve traded out Dan Butler by now, he had just four disposals and 14 points. Shai Bolton was best on ground at halftime but went backwards after the main break although we can’t be too upset with 63 from a rookie during a bye round.

PORT ADELAIDE 121 d BRISBANE LIONS 81

POWER STUDS: Robbie Gray owners have ridden the rollercoaster this year — it was on the up on Saturday with 129 points. Paddy Ryder dominated the ruck with 119 and the stars came to play with Chad Wingard, Brad Ebert and Ollie Wines all tonning up. Dan Houston returned from the wilderness and scored 90 — and remember Darcy Byrne-Jones?

POWER DUDS: What happened to Travis Boak? A former premium, he’s not even in the SuperCoach conversation any more and scored just 51.

LIONS STUDS: Hindsight is a wonderful thing. Why didn’t we all pick Dayne Zorko after Brisbane’s bye? He has scored 129 and 143 in his past two games — miles ahead of other higher-rated teammates (see duds section below). Some unusual names at the top of the leaderboard with Ryan Lester scoring 127 and Ryan Bastinac 122.

LIONS DUDS: Is Tom Rockliff still injured? He was way below his best, scoring just 59 although Dayne Beams and Stef Martin weren’t much better — the latter hit again by the curse of Archie Smith. Jake Barrett took an eternity to break out of single figures and finished with 54.

CARLTON 83 d GOLD COAST 73

BLUES STUDS: Bryce Gibbs’ 1480 owners are still partying after his monster 208 on the back of 43 disposals, 10 tackles and two goals (both in the tight final quarter). That overshadowed more incredible scores from Sam Docherty (153), Matthew Kreuzer (144) and Kade Simpson (142).

BLUES DUDS: If you’re one of the 10,000 teams that still have Tom Williamson, it’s time to jump off. His break-even is 72 and he hasn’t scored that many points since Round 6. Caleb Marchbank’s break-even is also back up to 68 after he could manage only 55 points.

SUNS STUDS: Jarryd Lyons was the only Sun over 100, scoring 117. Gary Ablett battled all night for 97 points.

SUNS DUDS: To all the coaches persuaded to recruit Tom Lynch over the past couple of weeks, we’re sorry. He was terrible on Saturday night, held to just one mark and one behind by Liam Jones and scoring just 37 points. Ouch. Ben Ainsworth’s 39 and Brandon Matera’s 44 would have hurt a few.

MELBOURNE 113 d WESTERN BULLDOGS 56

DEMONS STUDS: The Dees post a big win and Oscar McDonald top-scores with 111 — obviously. His brother scored 103 and Cam Pedersen and Jack Watts were also in three figures, along with Clayton Oliver, clearly the breakout star of 2017.

DEMONS DUDS: Not many knocks on Melbourne players. Jake Melksham had the poorest return with 51 — better than six Bulldogs.

BULLDOGS STUDS: Can’t blame Mitch Wallis (114) or Jordan Roughead (105) but nearly everyone else is in the gun.

BULLDOGS DUDS: Lin Jong is off the hook after a knee injury but what’s up with Jake Stringer (31), Easton Wood (49) and Jason Johannisen (58)? Jack Macrae’s 70 was well down on his season average, ditto Luke Dahlhaus and Marcus Bontempelli is officially in a slump, with his 90 right on his average from his past five games.
