IT’S never too early to grab a bargain.

After five rounds the dust is starting to settle on a volatile SuperCoach season, and we finally have some rookie cheer with big scores from the likes of Curtly Hampton and Andy Otten and some juicy options on the horizon.

The name of the game is to generate cash by trading in rookies (or underperforming mid-pricers) for new cheapies as they emerge.

EXPERT TIPS: THE PHANTOM’S TRADE TARGETS

STUDS AND DUDS: TRELOAR EXPLOADS, MURPHY BOMBS

Carlton’s Zac Fisher ($117,300 mid, break-even -57) and Hawthorn’s Blake Hardwick ($134,900 fwd, break-even -49) are on the bubble this week — plus Harley Balic if he returns from injury) — and keep an eye on Aaron Black ($137,100 fwd, 101 in his first game), Ed Vickers-Willis, Aidyn Johnson and Ben McNiece this week — plus David Myers, who had 35 disposals in his comeback game in the VFL.

Pulling the trade trigger will fatten your bank account, but that doesn’t earn you any more points. So who should you spend that money on? The motto is buy low, sell high.

That means steering clear of the likes of Rory Sloane, who is now $80,000 more expensive than he was in Round 1, Luke Dahlhaus (+$60k) and Ollie Wines (+$46k).

Look for proven guns who are undervalued after a bad game or two. Here are some names to consider as potential recruits.

PATRICK DANGERFIELD $667,800 MID (-$49,100)

Average: 125, Breakeven: 180

If you took the very brave move of starting without Danger hoping for an early price drop, well played. If he scores about 120 again on Sunday he’ll be available for about $640k next week.

SCOTT PENDLEBURY $595,700 MID (-$50,000)

Average: 110, Breakeven: 187

Another one to wait one more week with another big price drop looming leading into a game against Carlton. Remember he played sore early last year and recovered to finish with a 119 average.

JOSH P KENNEDY $570,500 MID (-$46,600)

Average: 107, Breakeven: 129

JPK hasn’t done too much wrong with just two scores under 100. Plays Carlton on Saturday.

DAN HANNEBERY $540,600 MID (-$76,200)

Average: 88, Breakeven: 109

Hanners have averaged 110-plus the past two years and you can bank on similar figures by Round 23, which makes him the perfect trade target right now. First two weeks were horrible but has responded with scores of 112, 95 and 112 in the past three rounds.

ADAM TRELOAR $558,900 MID (-$46,500)

Average: 105, Breakeven: 113

Showed on Anzac Day what he can do if he tidies up his kicking, posting a huge 141. To average 115 at the end of the year, which still seems realistic, he’ll need to be around the 120 mark from now on.

ROBBIE GRAY $550,500 MID (-$37,700)

Average: 100, Breakeven: 113

His 139 on Friday night could have been more if he had kicked straight (5.4). In just 1.6 per cent of teams and plays Brisbane this week, but might be best to wait until after Port’s Round 8 bye.

HEATH SHAW $485,200 DEF (-$91,300)

Average: 86, Breakeven: 112

We’re still backing Heath to be a top six defender by the end of the season. Scored 203 against the Dogs last year and faces them again on Friday night.

KADE SIMPSON $472,800 DEF (-$105,900)

Average: 82, Breakeven: 101

If you need a premium defender that’s a great price for a proven performer. But Simmo has only posted one ton from five games this year and he’s 32 — can he get back to the top of the mountain? Michael Hibberd is still $70k cheaper.

PATRICK CRIPPS $521,700 MID (-$63,800)

Average: 89, Breakeven: 119

Clearly still not 100 per cent fit and while his numbers aren’t terrible they are way off his 2016 returns. If he drops under $500k he’s too good to ignore.
