Michael Randall reveals how KFC SuperCoach team and the changes made to cater for a 17-round season

Michael Randall has enjoyed success with a KFC SuperCoach strategy focused on mid-pricers on recent years. Our office bargain hunter reveals his strategy for the 17-round AFL season.

Browny's SuperCoach starters

I’ve always been one to flirt with unconventional KFC SuperCoach teams.

The mid-priced madness strategy has worked for me over many years.

I got bored of the time-honoured rookies and premos strategy, given I can’t win the cash anyway.

This year, I flirted with a team packed with GWS and Western Bulldogs players early on, before settling on one that many would consider laughable — mostly blokes priced between $350-500k.

When Gill announced the competition would be reduced to 17 rounds, with no byes and a crammed schedule, I thought my strategy was cooked.

I’d thrown the toys out the cot and was prepared to clear the decks and start again.

But then I thought, ‘hang on, I’ve been high on guys like flamboyant Cat Quinton Narkle, Giant interceptor Nick Haynes, Essendon (finally full-time) midfielder Andy McGrath and Gold Coast acquisition Hugh Greenwood for months, why can’t I keep them?’

I’ve got a few obvious mid-pricers — breakout candidates in Port defender (more like midfielder, amirite?) Dan Houston, returning Carlton co-captain Sam Docherty (you have to have him) and Essendon comeback-kid Devon Smith.

And I’ve got raps on another young Bomber in Darcy Parish (no, I don’t like the Bombers, but I do think they will play a style of footy that is more conducive to SuperCoach in 2020).

With just 17 rounds I couldn’t keep all my mid-pricers, so gone are Callum Mills, Tim

English, Jack Steven (not a certainty to play anyway), Darcy McPherson.

I’m leaving Christian Petracca out. I just don’t trust him. If he hadn’t signed the new contract, I might have been tempted, but I’m expecting the typical inconsistent scoring from him he’s displayed over the journey — preparing to eat my words when he turns into Dangerfield, too.

Speaking of Danger, I’d love to have him, but I fear the bash and crash he puts his body through won’t hold up to the crammed schedule, where he could be playing three games in two weeks.

With 17 rounds, and quarters reduced to 16 minutes plus time on, it’s going to be a case of survival of the fittest — or the players who score the most per minute.

Enter Eagles ruckman Nic Naitanui.

Granted he has been a walking injury but, if they manage him properly, he’s going to score well in limited time — he’s routinely been among the best points per minute scorers in KFC SuperCoach. At the very least, if he stays healthy, he should hopefully make some quick money so I can make the jump to Max Gawn.

Nic Naitanui had the best points per minute ratio of any player last season.

I’ve gone down from Tristan Xerri to Bomber Henry Crauford as my donut in the ruck.

Doubt either of them play, so save the extra cash.

Top-priced Jack Macrae and Jake Lloyd are must-haves. They are among the best per-minute scorers in SuperCoach.

I really hate leaving Viney out, I think he’s finally healthy and will be a monster on the back of a full pre-season, so I’m comforting myself with Macrae.

The problem is the rookies. Save for high-priced No.1 pick Matt Rowell and maybe the kid Tom Green from GWS, I just don’t trust em. Any of em. That includes Marlion Pickett.

Hopefully options emerge early on.

Max King and Brandon Zerk-Thatcher are both out. I don’t like their chances of making enough money quick enough.

I wouldn’t even pay attention to the rookies I have at the moment, because they will change at about 6.20pm on Thursday night when the teams get named.

So I like to call this team Mid-Priced Premo Perfection and yes, I have the VC on Docherty.

Wish me luck — I’m gonna need it.
