KFC SuperCoach Rage Trades: Who to sell, who to buy after Round 12 plus scoring explained in frantic finish

With a three-round average of 111, Angus Brayshaw has come onto the radar of KFC SuperCoaches. Can he deliver a similar run home to his brilliant finish to 2018? Paul Dunn analyses the Demon in this week’s rage trades.

Round 12 is over, and so is the first batch of the Festival of Footy.

It has been a huge challenge for KFC SuperCoaches as we haven’t known teams until the day before matches, which has made trade planning very difficult. But no matter how thick and fast the games come, players we select can still find a way to disappoint us.

As we finally get a chance to take a breath, let’s look at who we should be looking at as we head into the final stretch of the season.

The round also included one of the wildest finishes we gave seen in recent times with Jack Newnes winning the game for the Blues with a goal after the siren.

ROUND 12 RAGE TRADES

BOOT HIM

Darcy Cameron RUC/FWD — 45 points

There are a couple of issues with Cameron and the first is that his scores can be very erratic. This week he scored less than half of last week’s score. The other concern is whether or not he stays in the Collingwood side. As we head towards the KFC SuperCoach finals we need certainty and unfortunately he isn’t providing it.

Dan Butler FWD — 40

Butler found his way into plenty of teams after some great form earlier in the season but his past two games have really hurt KFC Supercoaches. With these two scores in his price cycle he will have huge break-evens for a couple of weeks and will drop in price fast.

Dan Houston DEF — 77

Houston has been very inconsistent in his scoring over the past five weeks which means you will struggle to rely on him to get you a win. His role has been changing each game and when he plays the full defensive role he doesn’t produce big scores.

Lachlan Ash DEF/MID — 41

Ash was a popular rookie selection but he is still in just over 10 per cent of teams and has scored in the 40s on three occasions in the past four games. He has made as much money as he can and with scores like this he won’t take long to lose it all again. Move him on and fast.

Charlie Cameron FWD — 21

His past three read 72, 52 and now 21 points. The 7 per cent of KFC Supercoaches with him in their side will not be enjoying this downward spiral on the Charlie rollercoaster. He has had seven scores over 75 this season but five under that mark. This is a common issue we see with permanent forwards. You should be trading him out and looking more for a forward that also plays midfield.

ON WATCH

Nick Haynes DEF — 67

Only seven disposals for Haynes, which was well down on his average of 17.5 this season. Hopefully just a one-off lapse as the Giants didn’t have a good night at all. Look for him to bounce back to his regular great scoring quickly.

Lachie Hunter MID — 141

We saw Hunter return to the Bulldogs team after a long lay-off. We hadn’t seen him since Round 7, when he scored 118. His return game was impressive as he had 29 possessions and he used the footy really well. However, he was playing against Adelaide who give up plenty of points to their opposition so you may want to wait a week to see how he goes next game against Melbourne.

INJURY WATCH

Max Gawn $721,000 RUCK — DNP

There have been a lot of stories circulating about Max and whether or not he will play this week. Even if he does play he is a risk for your side. Pay very close attention to the news reports surrounding his PCL injury. Coming back after just a week or two is very rare with such an injury and you should be prepared to trade him out even if you have held him through the past two rounds. Relying on decent bench scores from the likes of Darcy Cameron (45) and Sam Draper (63) leaves you well behind coaches who have a top-line starting ruck.

Elliot Yeo $473,600 MID — DNP

Yeo was a late out for the game against the Hawks on Sunday night. He has a groin issue that could rule him out for five games. Coaches who bought him at what looked like a bargain price a few weeks ago unfortunately have to move him on without much to show for it.

James Sicily DEF — 50

Sicily was already having a poor game and was swung forward in the last quarter, which usually stalls his scoring. However, in the dying minutes of the game he was involved in a collision that we now know ruptured his ACL, Unfortunately, we need to trade him at a reduced value.

BUY HIM

Jake Lloyd DEF — 137

Lloyd has been on an extraordinary scoring run lately with no score under 125 in his past four games. He is playing the exact role we had hoped for as he has been averaging nearly six more kicks per game this year than handballs and has been taking a lot of the kick-ins for the Swans. He is a must-have in defence and you need to find a way to get him in now he is bye-free.

Nic Naitanui is in red-hot form.

Nic Naitanui RUCK — 153

Looking for a ruck trade from Gawn? Look no further. His past three games have seen scores of 146, 129 and then this week’s 153. On top of this he is also bye-free for the run home and has some good match-ups in the next couple of weeks with GWS (Jacobs/Mumford), Richmond (Soldo), Essendon (Draper), Western Bulldogs (English) and then probably his toughest two games of the run home with St Kilda (Ryder/Marshall) and North Melbourne (Goldstein) to finish the season.

Todd Goldstein RUCK — 134

With Gawn out there has been a rush towards Goldstein, for good reason. He has had a fantastic season so far and is very consistent. If you need to find a new ruckman then you can’t look past Goldy.

Jack Lukosius DEF/FWD — 135

Lukosius looked great this week as he rebounded off halfback with some big penetrating kicks into the forward line as he had 21 kicks and six handballs. His past few weeks have been building and this was the reward for those that have owned him this season. If you are looking for a replacement for Sicily then you may want to look left-field and bring Jack in.

Alex Witherden DEF — 101

Since returning to the side during this festival of footy scores of 170, 85, 100 and now 101 have him firming as a favourite for a top -six defender average. His price is still nice and cheap and he could be an easy upgrade in your backline.

Jy Simpkin FWD/MID — 105

Simpkin had a poor run when he had an injury from Rounds 7-9 but he has found his high-scoring form with two of his past three over 100. This is about as cheap as you will buy him for a while, so it is time to jump aboard if you need a forward.

Angus Brayshaw MID — 131

He has always had the potential to be a fantastic KFC SuperCoach player, but now we are seeing it. The reason we are now seeing this is that he is getting the midfield time we have all been screaming for! His past three weeks have seen him with 75 per cent, 80 per cent and 81 per cent time on ground, up from 60-70 per cent previously. It is starting to look like Brayshaw’s 2018 season when he came home with a 108 average over the final nine rounds. He is cheap and if this role continues, he will be someone you want in your side.

ROOKIE WATCH

For this section we classify a rookie as anyone cheaper than $250k to start the season.

You may want to trade these guys in if you don’t have them yet

Zac Foot – Debut score of 61. If you need a downgrade he would be a good one to look at this week before his price rises.

Jack Bytel – Has scores of 76 and 47 so far and looked good for the Saints. If you need a downgrade he could be an option and you won’t have to pay too much above his starting price.

Nic Reid – The mature-age forward played his first game for the Eagles on Sunday night and he finished with a 52. He is a $102k forward so if you need to downgrade, look to see if he gets a second game and then trade him in.

These guys are OK to hold as they made their BE and can still make more money:

Brandon Starcevich 99 – He has been heavily traded out in the past couple of weeks as we thought he couldn’t produce these scores. He made his BE, which will now drop for a couple of weeks.

Noah Anderson 126 – Anderson posted his best of the season as he was outstanding and this sees his BE drop and he can make even more money for us

Max King 99, Charlie Spargo 87, James Bell 82, Lachie Fogarty 78, John Noble 76, Tom De Koning 71, Tom Williamson 71, Boyd Woodcock 70, Will Day 68, Ben Cavarra 66, Shane McAdam 63, Sam Draper 63, Will Walker 63, Matthew Cottrell 61, Jarrod Brander 59, Connor Glass 59, Tom Sparrow 58, Xavier O’Halloran 53, Caleb Serong 52, Brandon Zerk-Thatcher 52, Izak Rankine 52, Harry Schoenberg 50, Tristan Xerri 49, Ben McKay 48, Tom Murphy 46, Darcy Cameron 45, Sam Flanders 40, Lachie Hosie 36, Sam Wicks 34, Lachlan Sholl 32, Tyson Stengle 30, Sam Mayes 24, Lachlan Schulz 23, Trey Ruscoe 18,

These guys need to be traded out after missing break-evens this week

Marlion Pickett 90, Bailey Scott 74, Jack Mahony 57, Rhylee West 51, Brett Bewley 51, Kane Farrell 47, Lachie Ash 41, Changkuoth Jiath 41, Kysaiah Kropinyeri-Pickett 40, Dan Butler 40, Ryan Gardner 30, Jacob Townsend 28, Mitch Georgiades 25, Minairo Frederick 25, Matt Eagles 22, Fisher Mcasey 17, Josh Honey 16

Rookie injury watch

Sam Simpson 44 – Simpson suffered a hamstring injury during the game and may miss some time. He was on the verge of needing to be traded anyway.

Andrew McPherson 41 – Another to suffer a hamstring injury. The Crows defender went off before halftime and didn’t come back.

HOW BLUES SCORED IN FRANTIC FINISH

– Fantasy Freako

Close games came either make or break your KFC SuperCoach score.

In a frantic finish in Perth on Saturday night, the closing stages had a major impact on scoring. If we start from the throw-in stoppage deep inside 50 for the Blues with 25 seconds remaining, Michael Walters scored 7.7 points for his hardball-get and a further 6.8 points for his long rebounding kick. Matt Taberner lost 5.7 points for giving away a free kick for deliberate out of bounds, while popular defender Sam Docherty earned 5.7 points for the free kick he earned after he was knocked down by Andrew Brayshaw after disposing of the ball. Brayshaw himself lost 5.7 points as a result of the free kick he gave away.

Even though Docherty’s kick inside 50 went out on the full, the kick itself was deemed ineffective as it resulted in a downfield free kick for the Blues. Consequently, Docherty’s kick was worth zero points and as a result, he didn’t earn a goal assist for Newnes’ goal.

Newnes scored 6.9 points for his long kick and a further 13.9 points for the matchwinning goal to cap off a memorable finish.
