KFC SuperCoach late mail: Selection news, whispers ahead of Round 1
As if the KFC SuperCoach rookie situation wasn’t bad enough. A cheapie in almost half of teams has been ruled out of Round 1, but a replacement has presented itself. Meanwhile, a popular Saint is set to return.
Supercoach
Don't miss out on the headlines from Supercoach. Followed categories will be added to My News.
First round KFC SuperCoach lockout is upon us and there’s plenty of selection news popping up.
The most significant of those involves one of the most popular SuperCoach rookies in the game, who is set to miss Round 1.
But in some positive news for players there are a number of cheapies already locked in to play on the weekend before teams have been named.
Check out all the latest SuperCoach news.
IZAK OUT
Time to hit the panic button. The SuperCoach forward with arguably the best earning potential is set to miss Round 1. Rankine played no Marsh Series games after sustaining a shoulder injury during an unofficial practice game, and a minor hamstring setback will keep him out of action this weekend. He is currently sitting in 43 per cent of teams, and it is time for us to look elsewhere and trade him in once he earns a spot in Gold Coast’s best-22.
WHAT’S WRONG WITH JACK STEVEN?
Jack Steven won’t play his first AFL game as a Cat, ruled out by coach Chris Scott on Wednesday. The former Saint has been managing a calf injury throughout the pre-season but looked set to face GWS in Round 1 after finishing with 26 disposals and 97 points in their Marsh Series finale. If you are one of the 29 per cent of SuperCoaches who have Steven, be sure to trade him out before Geelong’s game on Saturday.

POPULAR FORWARD ROOKIE SET TO PLAY
St Kilda prized youngster Max King will pull Saints guernsey for the first time against North Melbourne on Sunday.. King’s scoring will be inconsistent – like all key forwards – but his job security is rock solid as a cash cow. A slow burn for our forward benches

CRIPPS 2.0 PLAYING R1
GWS will unveil their academy gun in Round 1 with youngster Tom Green ($166,800, MID) informed on Wednesday that he will make his AFL debut. The tall big-bodied midfielder has drawn comparisons to Patrick Cripps for his work in the contest and posted a SuperCoach ton in his first ever AFL appearance in the Marsh Series. Lock him in.

ROBERTON RETURN ON THE CARDS
Dylan Roberton ($260,400, DEF) is almost certain to play his first AFL game since his horrific collapse against Geelong in early 2018.
“ (Roberton) will at this stage. I can’t see him not playing” – St Kilda coach Brett Ratten said on SEN.
The Saints rebounder is cheap as chips after almost two years out of the game but his heart issues look to be behind him. He presents as a discount option in defence with noted scoring potential.
DEBUTING DOG THE PERFECT RANKINE REPLACEMENT
It’s been a long wait for mature ager Ben Cavarra ($123,900, FWD) who will make his hotly anticipated debut. The 24-year-old was overlooked in several drafts before being taken as a rookie by the Bulldogs at the end of 2018, an injury halted 2019 campaign denying him the opportunity to show his full potential. He averaged 88 points in 12 VFL games last season and looms as the perfect replacement for Izak Rankine in the forward line.
DEMONS ANNOUNCE DOUBLE DEBUT
Two Demons will make their AFL debut this weekend, with small forward pair Kysaiah Pickett ($157,800, FWD) and Toby Bedford ($123,900, FWD) locked in to face West Coast. Pickett was one of the biggest draft bolters in 2019, selected at pick No. 12 while Bedford was taken in the 2018 draft. Bedford scored 43 points from 32 per cent game time in Marsh 2, while Pickett scored similar in a full game in their opening Marsh clash. Both are small forwards which doesn’t favour them as cash generators and the pair face a tough ask against the Eagles away from home.

OTHER DEBUTS ANNOUNCED
Collingwood have announced father-son Tyler Brown ($123,900, MID), brother of teammate Callum, will make his debut against the Bulldogs on Friday night. Brown scored 65 points in his first Marsh Series encounter and the assured outside midfielder looks to be a promising midfield bench option. Out of Adelaide, Power coach Ken Hinkley confirmed tall forward Mitch Georgiades ($130,800, FWD) will debut, while No.6 pick Fischer McAsey ($184,800, DEF) will play his first AFL game for the Crows. Docker second-year forward Sam Sturt ($123,900, FWD) is another debutant, but his scoring power was lacking during the pre-season.
