Round 12 AFL teams: All the ins and outs as North Melbourne names Tarryn Thomas

Tarryn Thomas will play in the AFL for the first time this season after a four-game spell in the VFL. Plus see all the round 12 ins and outs here.

North Melbourne believes Tarryn Thomas has made meaningful change in his personal life as it welcomes him back into its senior side against Essendon on Sunday.

Thomas has been named in the Roos’ expanded squad but will play in the senior clash against arch rival Essendon after four impressive games at VFL level.

The 23-year-old still has a July 18 court date for a charge of threatening to distribute an intimate image and has twice spent time away from North Melbourne this year.

The Roos encouraged Thomas to spend time away from the club in February after the Herald Sun revealed allegations over threats of violence to women.

Then after returning to the club in February the club again stood him down in March after judging he had failed to make significant progress in his respectful behaviour education program.

But the Roos believe he is now committing to that process enough to separately reward his training and VFL performances with elevation to the AFL.

The club does not expect senior coach Alastair Clarkson back in the short-term future as he works through the fallout of the Hawthorn First Nations investigation.

Thomas is back in the AFL program full time so has finished his part-time work as a cleaner and has the approval of the club’s senior players to return to the seniors.

The Roos have had permission to play him at AFL level for at least a week.

When Thomas was stood down in March over fresh allegations of poor behaviour towards women the AFL’s integrity team took up the case to ascertain when those comments were made.

At that stage Thomas’ future seemed in doubt but he has been able to satisfy the Roos leaders _ including football boss Todd Viney, CEO Jen Watt and president Sonja Hood _ that he has turned his life around.

Stand-in coach Brett Ratten said on Thursday Thomas was ready for an AFL recall in the near future and said the club would work with him on the attention it would attract.

“He has had a body of work for three or four weeks playing VFL and they were pretty hard conditions last week in the VFL game. It was quite wet and hard to hold your feet but his second half was pretty good. That has challenged the match committee group to work out where does he fit in, is he ready to go, is he right to perform at AFL level?” he said.

“You talk to Tarryn and we talk to everyone. That discussion (about him) is going to happen, he is going to come into the AFL team and he will have to deal with that and we will work with him and look after him and make sure he is focusing on the game and his performance.”

DONS DROP CULT HERO AS BIG MAN SET TO WAIT

Essendon has resisted the temptation to name spearhead Peter Wright, who is likely to be unleashed on rival Carlton in round 13.

Dylan Shiel is in line to return, while Alwyn Davey Jr, Andrew Phillips and potential debutant Rhett Montgomerie are in the extended squad.

Anthony McDonald-Tipungwuti has been omitted.

In other selection headlines, Western Bulldogs have named Adam Treloar to return from injury against Geelong, Lachie Hunter is back after a one-match suspension for Melbourne and Carlton has made five changes after its loss to Sydney.

Alex Cincotta, Lewis Young, Jack Silvagni, Zac Fisher and Lochie O’Brien return to the Blues team.

Last week’s sub Ed Curnow has again been named among the emergencies.
