Champion Data has named its mid-season All-Australian team, and it is packed with surprises.
But analyst Daniel Hoyne wants to make one thing very clear: every pick is based on data.
Hoyne revealed the full team on this week’s episode of Pure Footy, and it features two Tigers, two Giants, no Crows and no Jeremy Cameron.
“I’ll get hammered for this, but Jeremy Cameron’s last four weeks has fallen right away purely off the back of his ball use,” Hoyne said.

Coleman Medal leader Charlie Curnow (37 goals) is at centre half-forward in the Champion Data team and the full-forward spot is taken by Joe Daniher (30), while Cameron (36) misses out.
Hoyne said all selections were made using Champion Data’s new player ratings system that ranks players against every other player in their position per 100 minutes of game time.
The wing spots were awarded to Essendon’s Nic Martin and Saint Mason Wood.
“We’re going with the genuine wingers,” Hoyne said.
“Nic Martin, based on our new ratings system, is on track for the best season by a wingman since Steele Sidebottom in 2016.
“Keep an eye on him. His ability to be able to impact the scoreboard, both himself and set up his teammates, is superb.”
Dustin Martin is on one half-forward flank and the other was awarded to Jack Macrae, the highest rated mid-forward in the comp under Champion Data’s ratings.
Daniher is flanked by two GWS small forwards, Toby Green and Brent Daniels, who rates elite for disposals, forward-50 ground balls, score assists and forward-half pressure this season.
Another big surprise is in the ruck, where Brodie Grundy has been picked ahead of Tim English, Sean Darcy and Rowan Marshall.
“Brodie Grundy is the highest rating ruckman in the competition but he’s been impacted since Max Gawn came back, so that’s a dilemma for Melbourne.”
In another big episode, Hoyne and Fox Footy’s David King explain why Carlton is not making the most of Adam Saad, how Sam Mitchell has transformed Hawthorn’s midfield and how Collingwood challenges its opposition with the “Craig McRae sandwich”.
