The AFL is holding out hope it will be able to get a big crowd into the MCG for this year’s Grand Final — but the clock is ticking.

There will be no footy fans at games in Melbourne for at least two weeks and any return is likely to be cautious after Victoria’s recent Covid outbreak.

That could present the league with a dilemma over whether the venue for the biggest game of the year could be shifted away from Melbourne for the second year in a row.

But Herald Sun reporter Jay Clark said if only 40,000 fans are allowed in the MCG, the decision is a no-brainer.

“It’s clear cut for me,” he said on today’s episode of KFC SuperFooty TV.

“I think this is a really easy decision — it’s obviously Perth.

“We saw it on display for the Dreamtime game earlier this year and it was absolutely rocking.

“During this Covid time it’s OK to be a little bit different. Yes, there is a contract with the MCG and when everything returns to normal, fingers crossed, then it will be played at the MCG.”

Clark said the call would be tougher if 70-80,000 fans could get into the MCG but anything under that would present an opportunity to showcase the game in another state as the AFL did so successfully in 2020.

“I’m not going to lose any sleep over that.

“It’s a world-class stadium (in Perth) which looked magnificent for the Dreamtime game.”

Also on today’s show Clark, colleague Michael Warner and former Melbourne and Port Adelaide star Jack Watts revealed the two teams they predict will face off in the Grand Final, debate the future of David Teague, rate the best marks they have seen and give their tips for every game in Round 20.
