Carlton looks highly likely to appoint Michael Voss as its next coach.

After the club was rebuffed by both Alastair Clarkson and Ross Lyon, the Brisbane champion jetted into Melbourne on Wednesday to meet with the Blues’ hierarchy.

But is he the inspiring option Blues fans were promised when the board axed David Teague?

The KFC SuperFooty TV team has its doubts.

“I reckon Voss will coach Carlton,” Herald Sun writer Mick Warner said.

“Voss will be good, he deserves another chance, he’s a legend of the game, but it’s not quite what they were promising their supporters.

“I’m going to say it’s not an inspiring choice, compared to a Ross Lyon or a Clarko.

“(New president) Luke Sayers said ‘we are a destination club, because we’ve got Brian Cook’ — but Brian Cook is not going to kick that many goals.”

Fellow Herald Sun scribe Jay Clark concurred, believing Ross Lyon should have been the man.

Clarky said the pressure on the Blues’ next coach would immediately be at boiling point.

“Remember Luke Sayers, in that press conference, sitting next to former CEO Kane Liddle, saying ‘we’re playing finals next year at Carlton’ and that is the expectation,” Clark said.

“So the pressure on a new coach coming in — I think Carlton have got the cattle — but the expectations are going to be high.

“The first two months of the season for Carlton, given that expectation, and the pressure on them, will be huge under a new coach — whether it’s Voss or Adam Kingsley.”
