An altercation between Melbourne teammates Steven May and Jake Melksham didn’t surprise former Demon Jack Watts.
Both players have been directed to undertake community service after coming to blows during a boozy night out at a Prahran restaurant on Sunday. May has also been suspended for Monday’s blockbuster against Collingwood for drinking alcohol while recovering from concussion.
Watts, who played for Melbourne for nine seasons before finishing his career at Port Adelaide, said it was far from the first time teammates had come to blows away from the footy field – and the media spotlight.

“I think I would have seen this 20 times over my career,” he said on a new episode of KFC SuperFooty TV.
“If you had have asked me (which) two Melbourne players were in a scuffle, I would have probably said these two.
“Clearly they’ve had a bit too much to drink, it gets a bit chirpy and something’s pushed over the line – they’re good mates ... it obviously got to that point where Melky’s had enough.”
Watts revealed former teammates Nathan Jones and Jeremy Howe had been involved in a similar incident during his time at the Dees.
“Jonesy and Howey had a good one one year, just a little fisticuff to the grill.
“It was exactly what would have happened here – Howey gets pretty chirpy on the p---, so does Jonesy, they were both going at each other and one person’s just had enough.”
Herald Sun reporter Jay Clark said the incident was a wake-up call for the reigning premier, with the Demons’ season starting to turn “pear-shaped” on the field with successive losses.
He said the one-match club suspension for May “feels a bit light to me”.
“I feel like a club that knows their season is starting to wobble a bit, as opposed to three or four matches – he’s really upset the apple cart.”
