KFC SuperFooty TV: Lauren Wood and Jay Clark look at the big issues in the AFL before round 22

Geelong could land a huge one-two punch in this year’s trade period, and Collingwood could help the Cats pay for it.

The Cats and Melbourne have emerged as key suitors for out-of-favour Pies ruckman Brodie Grundy, and Herald Sun reporter and trade expert Jay Clark says Geelong has the salary cap space to accommodate Grundy and GWS bull Jacob Hopper next season.

But that would require Collingwood paying a significant chunk of Grundy’s salary at his new club.

Grundy has five years to run on a seven-year contract worth $950,000 per year.

“With Adam Treloar, Collingwood chipped in about $250,000 to $300,000 per year of his salary,” Clark said on KFC SuperFooty TV.

“Talk in club land is they could pay up to $400,000 (for Grundy).

“I think that’s a bit excessive, but that’s the talk in recruiting circles at the moment.

“I think potentially similar to Treloar, if it’s $250,000, (his new club) pays about $700,000 per year – I think that’s about what Brodie Grundy is worth.

“The Cats have salary cap room – imagine if you could put Brodie Grundy into that team with Hawkins and Cameron and Blicavs and Stewart. I believe Geelong can afford Grundy and Hopper together as a one-two punch.”

But Clark said the Cats might have to beat Melbourne to the punch to secure Grundy if he is put up for trade.

“He’s clearly on the nose for some reason at Collingwood.

“He’s already met with GWS and Melbourne as well, so he’s exploring his options

“Up until now we’ve talked about Port Adelaide, being the hometown SA link, and GWS, who probably need a ruckman and are trying to swap out Taranto and Hopper, so there could be some movement there.

“Yesterday we reported Melbourne is the frontrunner, and Geelong is also keen.

“Melbourne, to me, makes total sense. They lose Luke Jackson, what are they going to do next year to support 31-year-old Max Gawn?”

Host Lauren Wood said the Geelong lifestyle could appeal to Grundy, as it has to recent recruits like Jeremy Cameron and Isaac Smith.

Clark said it set the scene for a massive trade period for the Pies, and a very different one to 2020 when they parted ways with Treloar, Jaidyn Stephenson and Tom Phillips in a fire sale the shocked the footy world.

“This is Collingwood conditioning the footy public to a potential Brodie Grundy departure – and St Kilda I believe are still very keen on Jordan De Goey ... so there are very interesting moves afoot at Collingwood.”
