Watts — who concedes he felt the burden of the No. 1 tag during his 174-game career — said the burden of living up to expectations at a battling club left Horne-Francis in a no-win situation.

“If I’m him, I would be getting out of there,” Watts said on KFC SuperFooty TV.

“I didn’t (leave Melbourne and) it didn’t really turn out great for me really did it?

“The amount of pressure he’s under, anything he does, if you’re pick 76 and you like a tweet or you like something, no one cares.

“Even the thing with Todd Goldstein, that probably happens five times at every other club.”

The Roos reportedly knocked back three first-round picks during last year’s exchange period in a deal which would have kept Horne-Francis in South Australia.

But he continues to be linked with a return to his home state after putting off contract talks at Arden St.

Watts said there were few positives about being selected as the No. 1 pick.

“There’s a number of factors that come into this. It was pretty tough going, to be honest. It’s not just being the No. 1 pick, but it was the club, where we were at, how we played,” the former Demons and Port player said.

“There’s no real positive, other than maybe you get overpaid a little bit of you get a few games when you shouldn’t get games.

“If you play really well, you should play like that every week. If you play poorly, you need to be better. There’s not a lot of upside.”

Horne-Francis’ body language was questioned after North’s defeat to GWS, following several incidents including a heated exchange with teammate Todd Goldstein.

He will miss the next three rounds after he was suspended for two games for a crude hit on Josh Kelly during North’s loss to GWS.

The Roos have the bye this round.

Horne-Francis was recently cautioned by North Melbourne after flying home to South Australia for Mother’s Day without altering the club.

He has endured a tough start to his AFL career, featuring in 11 losses in his first 12 matches.

Herald Sun journalist Scott Gullan said Horne-Francis would not “lose face” if he quit North Melbourne 12 months into his AFL career.

Bailey Smith, the AFL’s illicit drugs policy, Melbourne’s slide and Brodie Grundy’s trade value were all on the KFC SuperFooty TV agenda ahead of Round 14 as Watts and Gullan were joined by Jay Clark.
