Port Adelaide skipper Tom Jonas heaped praise on Ollie Wines following his demotion from co-captain earlier this year.

The pair were controversially named co-captains ahead of the 2019 season before the Power changed reverted back to the one skipper for this season, opting for Jonas.

Speaking on SEN Melbourne with Nick Dal Santo and Jack Heverin, the Power defender couldn’t speak highly enough of Wines after the fallout.

“Throughout Port’s history the captain’s always worn the number one jumper,” he said.

“There was a strong push from our membership to bring that back.

“I’m privileged to follow in the footsteps of some greats like Russell Ebert, Dom Cassisi, Matty Primus and Gavin Wanganeen.

“Ollie’s been unbelievable, he’s shown the sort of man that he is (about the way he’s coped). “I’m very lucky to be able to call on him and still going to be working really closely with Ollie and Hamish (Hartlett) this year.”

“He’s flying at the moment, he had a few set backs last year.”

The Power have struggled with consistency across the past five seasons, making the finals just once and Jonas said they’re looking for the answer.

“I don’t know the exact answer as we haven’t found the right balance,” he said.

“Personally I think it comes down to reliable and consistent in everything we do, on the track or recovery, those minute details, if you miss some of them, they translate onto game day.

“For us it was ground ball, we were good around the contest, it was about getting to that next contest.

“We’ve done a lot of work on our patterns on getting to those contests.”

Before the Marsh Community Series, the Power will face Adelaide in a Twenty20 Showdown to raise funds for the SA bushfire appeal as Jonas rates Port’s chances.

“The opportunity to play cricket on Adelaide Oval is pretty special but more than that, it’s about doing our bit,” he said.

“There’s a few boys that are handy, Hamish Hartlett, (Travis) Boaky’s a nice all-rounder and the Port Adelaide boys won the Adelaide Turf T20 cricket championship last year.

“It should be a great event and we’d love to see everyone down there.”
