Brad Crouch says he is hopeful Adelaide won’t match a bid from St Kilda and allow him to join the Saints.

The Crows have said they would be prepared to match a bid from the Saints for Crouch and force a trade if the compensation for the midfield star was less than Pick No. 2.

The Saints contract to Crouch has not triggered the tier of compensation required for the second pick of the draft and the Crows have until Wednesday to decide if they will match the bid.

Arriving back in Adelaide from Queensland, Crouch said he was hopeful the Crows would not match any bid from the Saints.

“I’ve told St Kilda I’m fully committed to them, so I want to see that out,” he said.

“At this stage I just want to be at St Kilda and the decision I’ve made I’m fully committed to them.”

Ralph: Williams move a masterstroke

Next year’s salary cap is $13.273 million plus a marketing allowance of $1.194 million.

So, in effect, by paying an extra $100,000 in a $14.4 million cap, Carlton has paid one extra dollar in every 140 it possesses in that cap next year to secure Zac Williams without the loss of a first-round pick.

Hand him a $700,000 salary over four years and GWS would match the end-of-first-round compensation pick then stick its hand out for the club’s No.8 draft pick.

As it happens the Blues will get a deal done on Essendon’s Adam Saad using that exact draft capital.

So if you are one of those prepared to picket-line Ikon Park on the size Williams’ deal, you also have to believe the club should only have gone after one of Williams and Saad.

Dees hits and misses

Melbourne has historically kept its powder pretty dry when it comes to trades.

Remember Vic Michie, Cam Pederson, Jordan Gysberts and John Meesen?

They all came and went to and/or from the Dees without much fanfare.

They have got more adventurous in recent times, and if Steven May, Jake Lever and Ben Brown help Melbourne win the 2021 flag, watch for the revised version of this article.

For now, here are the Demons’ biggest exchange period hits and misses.

Jay Clark
Carlton wants something back from Essendon in the Adam Saad deal.
The Blues have their eyes on a mid-round pick coming back to them if they hand over pick No. 8 for the blistering defender.
But the Bombers are holding their ground, believing Carlton should give up its top pick in a straight swap for Saad.
It is why the two clubs are yet to come to a deal ahead of the trade period.

Essendon believes it can overcome the departures of Joe Daniher, Saad and Orazio Fantasia and put itself in a strong position as the club eyes Josh Dunkley (Western Bulldogs), Peter Wright (Gold Coast), Jye Caldwell (GWS Giants) and a prized top key-forward in the draft.
Wright could be secured in exchange for a bargain late draft pick and help support Sam Draper in the ruck in 2021.
The Bombers have also been linked to St Kilda speedster Nick Hind.

Adam Treloar is unwilling to take a pay cut to relieve Collingwood of his $4.5 million contract impasse as Nathan Buckley was on Monday forced to defend the club’s conduct in an increasingly messy saga.

Collingwood continues to push hard to jettison Treloar after an official meeting last week and several phone conversations between the midfielder and coach Buckley.

The Herald Sun believes several senior teammates are upset that Treloar has been used as a scapegoat for the club’s salary cap issues.

It is understood Treloar was prepared to push back his salary from previous contracts multiple times to allow the Pies to recruit the likes of Dayne Beams and Daniel Wells in recent years.

Now the Pies are unwilling to commit to his salary, and while Hawthorn hasn’t rule out a late bid for him, there are few suitors prepared to absorb the $900,000-a-season wage.

Former St Kilda forward Paddy McCartin has not yet completed a medical at Carlton as the Blues weigh up taking the Normer No.1 pick.

A host of clubs have McCartin on their radars, including the Blues, but there are no guarantees he will be picked up.

While the Blues could yet put McCartin, 24, through a full battery of medical assessments, it has not happened at this stage.

Carlton is considering McCartin but already has a swathe of key forwards including Harry Mckay, Levi Casboult, Mitch McGovern and hybrid goalkicker Charlie Curnow. Liam Jones has also played forward.

As a delisted free agent, the former Geelong Falcons’ product could be picked up for nothing and play for a minimum wage in a bid to re-ignite his career.

But all decisions will be subject to full AFL and medical expert approval after a worrying run of concussions ended McCartin's time at the Saints last season.

McCartin had eight concussions which left the goalkicker suffering terrible symptoms in 2019 including sensitivity to light and sleeplessness.

But those close to McCartin are optimistic he is in a good position to pull the boots back on pending approval from the authorities.

The goalkicker has ramped up his fitness in recent months and received a strong endorsement from Melbourne champion Garry Lyon, who has done some training with him.

Geelong could be a good fit for McCartin close to home as the Cats try and pull off a deal for GWS Giants’ superstar Jeremy Cameron.
