AFL 2022: Adelaide Crows news and likely trade developments

The Suns have made it clear they require a first-round pick from the Crows for SA-bound forward Izak Rankine. But that’s not all. Here’s the latest on the deal.

Adelaide is likely to secure star Gold Coast forward Izak Rankine for the club’s No. 5 selection and a 2023 draft pick as late as a third-rounder after strong progress in recent talks.

The Suns have made clear they require the Crows’ first pick, which will drift back to No. 6 after a matched bid for Brisbane father-son Will Ashcroft.

But with the Suns collecting draft points for academy players including young academy forward Jed Walter next year, they will also want another selection in the 2023 national draft.

The Suns already have multiple picks in this year’s draft they will swap for picks in the 2023 draft, including some of selections 25, 31 and 34.

They value Rankine in a similar bracket to Fremantle’s Adam Cerra, who moved to Carlton last year for pick six and a future third-rounder.

The progress means Rankine is a certainty to find his way to Adelaide rather than the deal becoming embroiled in acrimony.

The Suns will trade out their own No. 7 draft selection to a club prepared to absorb Jack Bowes’ $1 million plus contract for 2023-4 so are keen to secure an early top-10 selection.

But given the evenness of the early top eight selections they are unlikely to try to trade up to get higher in the draft despite having the draft capital to achieve that.

Collingwood is at the front of the queue for Gold Coast midfielder Brayden Fiorini but the Suns are unlikely to hand a quality pick to the Pies if they decide to take on his $600,000 back-ended 2023 salary.

The Pies could consider spreading that salary across two seasons.

The Suns would be happy to keep Fiorini, who is understood to have met with Collingwood last week.

The Suns are attempting to strip $2 million from their cap so they can create salary cap room for future free agency and trade moves to round out their list.

The club is optimistic it will secure young stars Noah Anderson and Matt Rowell on new deals over the summer after early talks between their managers and list boss Craig Cameron.

“We have started preliminary discussions with their managers,” Cameron told the Herald Sun.

“Those guys are on their break so when they come back we will ramp up discussions. They are invested in what the club is building so it will just be a normal contract discussion.”

Cameron believes the club had enough midfield depth to lose Bowes and still absorb any injuries next year after the starting onball unit barely missed a game.

“We have got younger fellas coming through like Alex Davies, Elijah Hollands and Sam Flanders,” he said.

“They add a different mix to what we have got athletically and even in the way they play their footy.”
