There is still time for prospective AFL footballers to force their way onto centre stage before season 2022.

Invited players can train with clubs during the summer in a bid to be signed in the pre-season supplemental selection period.

The official signing window is from January 10 to March 9 for clubs that have list vacancies.

Every team except Gold Coast can sign a maximum of 44 footballers for the 2022 season, comprising between 36 and 38 on the primary list, four to six category A rookies and up to two category B rookies.

The Suns can have nine category A rookies as part of their assistance package.

The Lions ran a tight ship on the recruiting scene this year, given they didn’t have many list spots open. That was evidenced in them delisting and redrafting the contracted Cam Ellis-Yolmen to meet AFL list rules. There won’t be any further movement unless there is a long-term injury. Father-son prospects Will Ashcroft (son of Marcus) and Jaspa Fletcher (Adrian) will appear during pre-season training.

Co-captain Patrick Cripps’ brother Josh will train with the Blues this summer as he tries to win the list spot made vacant from Liam Jones’ shock, vaccine-related retirement. Cripps’ competition will come from fellow tall Tyreece Leiu, who will also be part of Carlton’s pre-season. The Blues have used the pre-season supplemental selection period to sign Oscar McDonald, Callum Moore, Matt Cottrell and Michael Gibbons in the past.

The 202cm ruck prospect sits outside the official playing list and isn’t eligible for senior selection but can play for Collingwood’s VFL team.

There are spots up for grabs at the Bombers, who will audition a series of candidates before making a final call. Dylan Clarke, who was the last Essendon player delisted, will try to win back his spot from Monday, while Ronald Fejo jnr will also start training then. Tex Wanganeen — the son of club great and 1993 Brownlow medallist Gavin — will also be at The Hanger as a father-son invitee after being overlooked in the drafts. Nothing is locked in yet for Subiaco forward Nic Martin.

FREMANTLE

Irishman Ultan Kelm, who signed a two-year category B rookie deal in October, won’t be on the Dockers’ list until 2023. That means there are two openings next season for players eligible for that status if Fremantle chooses to fill them. The rest of Justin Longmuir’s list is locked and loaded.

GEELONG

Arrivals: Jon Ceglar (traded – Hawthorn), Tyson Stengle (delisted free agent), Toby Conway (pick 24), Mitch Knevitt (25), James Willis (32), Flynn Kroeger (48), Cooper Whyte (64), Oliver Dempsey (rookie), Oisin Mullin (category B rookie)

Nathan Freeman will try to force his way onto the Suns’ list with a pre-season audition but he may have some competition. Gold Coast will decide next week whether to add further train-on players – but won’t sign a second category B rookie. Ex-Suns Mitch Riordan and Sam Fletcher were pre-season supplemental selection period additions.

GWS GIANTS

Arrivals: Finn Callaghan (pick three), Jarrod Brander (delisted free agent), Leek Aleer (15), Josh Fahey (42), Cooper Hamilton (rookie)

Departures: Matt Buntine (delisted), Jeremy Finlayson (traded – Port Adelaide), Tom Hutchesson (delisted), Shane Mumford (delisted), Sam Reid (delisted), Nick Shipley (delisted)

Contracted: 44 (36 on primary list, six category A rookies, two category B rookies)

List spots available: 0

Brander is the Giants’ reclamation project for season 2022 and there won’t be any further list additions following the draft. They delisted Mumford rather than him retiring and he nominated for the national draft to remain eligible for next year’s mid-season draft. He is just an insurance policy if the Giants suffer a slew of big man injuries and need to resurrect him again. Mumford will stay in shape and be the club’s ruck coach for now.

The Hawks are still working through their options with their vacant category A rookie list spot – and there’s a chance they won’t invite anyone else to Waverley Park this pre-season. They aren’t expected to add a further category B rookie, on top of Ireland’s Fionn O’Hara.

MELBOURNE

The reigning premier is fresh from what’s been perceived as another successful draft raid and isn’t expected to bring in a train-on player or sign a second category B rookie at this stage. Former Crow and Saint Tom Lynch will sign with the Kangaroos once the pre-season supplemental selection period opens on January 10. He will combine his playing duties with serving as a development coach. There are no plans to sign a second category B rookie, alongside Tasmanian Matt McGuinness. Meanwhile, ex-Demons defender Marty Hore will start training at the club from next week as he chases an AFL lifeline.

List spots available: 1 (can sign a category B rookie)

The Tigers invested heavily in the draft as they replenish a playing list that’s enjoyed great success in recent years. They have the option of signing a category B rookie but clubs rarely do so after this period. Ex-basketballer Mate Colina is their only player with that status entering the season at this stage.

No decisions been made on what to do with the last two list spots, and any footballers who come in to train won’t do so until after Christmas. The Saints have been active in the pre-season supplemental selection period previously, with Mason Wood, Paul Hunter, Jonathon Marsh and Sam Rowe all signing with the club that way. They could also choose to wait until the mid-season draft, where they snapped up Max Heath and Cooper Sharman this year.

Paddy McCartin, the No.1 pick in the 2014 draft, is training with the Swans in the hope of reigniting a stalled AFL career severely impacted by concussions. The 25-year-old played with Sydney’s VFL side this year and could be reinvented as a key defender after being better known as a forward. McCartin’s clearest path to the Swans’ senior side – should he be signed through the pre-season supplemental selection period – is in defence. The former Saint last played an AFL game in 2018.

East Perth midfielder Kade Dittmar will join the Eagles for pre-season training in the hope of securing their last list spot. But decorated defender Brad Sheppard’s imminent retirement because of lingering concussion symptoms will create another vacancy. Decisions about who else will compete for those places will be made in the new year, with former Lion Tom Joyce among the potential options.

Luke Beveridge’s squad is full ahead of next season, with former captain Wood’s retirement coming early enough for the Dogs to replace him in the draft. The only potential changes would be if there is a long-term injury ahead of the season.
