Will Kelly, Isaac Quaynor likely to land at Collingwood after AFL national draft

REMEMBER the names Will Kelly and Isaac Quaynor. The gun defenders are set to land at Collingwood in the upcoming super draft – handing the Magpies two potential stars in one swoop.

A PAIR of Collingwood fanatics could help ease the pain of the club’s Grand Final defeat, with the Magpies to have first rights for them in next month’s national draft.

Will Kelly — whose father Craig played in Collingwood’s 1990 premiership — has been courted all year by the Magpies as a potential father-son selection, while the club also has priority access to fellow defender Isaac Quaynor, a member of its Next Generation Academy.

The pair were both in the stands at the MCG watching their beloved Magpies play in last Saturday’s Grand Final and spent time training with the club last December.

They are now hopeful of joining their heroes on a more permanent basis after strong final years of underage football.

Kelly is an athletic key defender who stands 193cm tall and excels in one-on-one contests and with his overhead marking, his game having gone forward in leaps and bounds this year.

“My development since last year has been massive I think,” Kelly said.

“I think I’ve improved in a lot of areas I wanted to improve on. Just the competitiveness, the work ethic during games and also mainly the confidence to play with the best players and know that I can still hold my own.

“Dad, having gone through all this process before, he’s been a huge help and also teaching me that footy’s just a small part of your life too and there’s so many other things that you can learn from the footy program to take into the rest of your life.”

Quaynor, 182cm rebounding defender, plays like Western Bulldogs star Jason Johannisen with a mop of hair to match.

While born and raised in Melbourne, the 18-year-old’s father hails from the West African nation of Ghana, ruling him eligible to be part of the Magpies Next Generation Academy for indigenous or multicultural prospects.

The Oakleigh Chargers TAC Cup product had always been a big fan of Magpies skipper Scott Pendlebury, so much so his phone background was a picture of the 2010 premiership player until Quaynor trained alongside his idol last year.

“I realised once I got there I probably should change it just so I don’t look like a little fan boy,” Quaynor said.

“He did bring it up when I spoke to him a while after and thought it was pretty funny.”
