Gold Coast young gun Mac Andrew has been charged with drink driving after failing a roadside breath test in the early hours of New Year’s Eve.

The Suns confirmed that Andrew would face a Queensland court in January, with the club saying it was “extremely disappointed” in his actions.

Gold Coast stated that the 19-year-old had co-operated with Queensland Police and was released from custody ahead of his court date.

In addition to any criminal charges, Andrew will face a club-imposed sanction when the Suns return to pre-season training on January 9.

“Mac has made a poor decision and understands that he has let a number of people down, as well as the club and the wider Gold Coast community,” Gold Coast football boss Wayne Campbell said.

“He understands the severity of his actions and has shown remorse and as a club we will now look to support Mac and help him through the situation.”

Selected at pick 5 in the 2021 national draft, Andrew played the final four games of his debut season in 2022.

A 201cm key defender who was recruited from NAB League club Dandenong Stingrays, Andrew had been part of Melbourne’s Next Generation Academy but the Demons were unable to match a bid on the talent under new AFL rules.

Andrew signed a two-year contract extension in April, which will see him remain at the Suns until at least the end of 2025.

“I’m loving playing football for the Gold Coast,” he said at the time.

“I’ve become really close to the staff and development coaches and they have all helped me to understand how we want to play as a football club and what it takes at the elite level.

“I think we’ve got a really bright future ahead and I’m excited to continue to learn from those around me and have a big impact at the Suns.”

Andrew averaged 10.5 disposals and 4.5 marks across his first four senior games, which came after he had produced some impressive form for Gold Coast in the VFL.
