WESTERN Bulldogs captain Katie Brennan is out indefinitely after scans revealed ligament damage in her ankle.

The Dogs skipper injured her right ankle in Saturday’s loss to Adelaide with coach Paul Groves hopeful she will be back before the end of the season.

“We know Katie will do everything possible to ensure she can get back out there before the end of the season,” he said.

“While it’s unclear how many weeks she might miss, she has already started working with our medical staff to make sure she recovers at the earliest opportunity.

“As one of our leaders, Katie will be difficult to replace, but the group of players who have missed selection are working extremely hard to be ready for their opportunity.

“We have great confidence in those players to make an impact at this level, which shows the level of depth in our current playing group.”

Brennan appeared to twist the ankle and was immediately lame.

Brennan, who had been one of the Bulldogs best with two goals, had to be helped from the field by trainers.

The star forward missed most of last year’s AFLW season with an ankle injury before tearing her quad as she attempted to make a comeback in the final rounds.

The Bulldogs have already lost fellow forward and No. 1 draft pick Isabel Huntington to a serious knee injury.

Huntington tore her ACL last weekend against Brisbane and requires a knee reconstruction.
