A RECORD crowd of 41,975 was on hand to watch Fremantle beat Collingwood by 13 points in Saturday’s AFLW clash at Perth’s Optus Stadium.
Collingwood kicked the first two goals of the match, but Fremantle dominated from that point on to secure the 6.4 (40) to 4.3 (27) win.
Although 54,000 tickets were sold for the match at $2 each, more than 12,000 people didn’t end up turning up.

But there were still easily enough fans to smash the previous crowd record for an AFLW match - the 24,500 who watched last season’s opener between Carlton and Collingwood at Ikon Park.
And the record for a standalone women’s domestic game in Australia was also broken.
That obscure record was set in 1929, when 41,000 fans attended a women’s exhibition game at Adelaide Oval between employees from a department store and a pyjama factory.
The huge level of interest for Saturday’s game was largely sparked by Perth’s new $1.5 billion stadium.
But fans new to women’s football were treated to an entertaining spectacle that featured plenty of biff and a good amount of goals.
The women’s league was widely panned for its low scoring after the opening round, but Saturday’s match featured five goals alone in the opening quarter as both teams showed an attacking flair.
Collingwood made a perfect start with two goals in the opening five minutes. But Fremantle took a stranglehold on the contest from that point on, slamming on four straight goals to take a 13-point lead into halftime.
The first half featured a series of fiery moments and behind-the-play incidents. And tempers also threatened to boil over in the second half.
