CARLTON twins Jess and Sarah Hosking had to wait a long time to run out in alongside one another in the AFLW. But last night the ‘Sissy Sassy Dolls’ they marked the occasion in style.

IT was the first real footballing moment that the Hosking twins had shared.
They’ve never been emotional, according to Jess who made her AFLW debut for Carlton last night.
But the last two weeks have been a whole new beast.

And when her twin Sarah left a small box and a card on top of her twin’s navy blue jumper before last night’s game, Jess admitted the sense of the occasion — and the fact she was finally sharing a major milestone alongside her “Sissy Sassy Doll” — struck her.
“We haven’t had an iconic moment for the two of us before — we’ve always kind of gone through playing younger years and there was nothing that had been really big that we’d had together,” Jess said.
“This moment has been the biggest part of our lives. I’ve waited 18 months for it.
“Sar got me two rings and a little charm before the game — I went to put my jumper on and there was a little Pandora box there. She made me open a little card and I got a little bit emotional. It was very special.
“‘Carlton’ and the date was engraved … and we call each other Sissy Sassy Doll, so the ring was engraved with that, and then there was another heart ring and a horseshoe charm.”
Jess had waited longer than most to pull the jumper on. She was drafted alongside her twin before last season, despite having an ACL injury that meant she would miss the entire season.
She watched on from the coaches box as the AFL Women’s was opened by Carlton and Collingwood last year, but got a whole new view of things last night, collecting nine disposals and landing five tackles to be named among the Blues’ best.
“I definitely liked being on the ground more,” she said.
“I was very happy. We’re happy to come away with a win and that’s the main thing, regardless of score. The girls did an unbelievable job. It’s so exciting.”
There’d never been many tears between the twins, but the crescendo to last night was immense.
“With this footy experience, over the last two weeks we’ve found each other getting really emotional about things, which we never would,” Jess explained.
“I don’t know why, but it comes back to that we haven’t had an iconic moment to focus on. This one has been the biggest build-up. That’s over and done with now — no more crying.”
Naturally, the two share a unique bond. They even have a language only one another understand so they can secretly communicate.
Their preparation was thrown a curveball when their nan travelled from Sydney for the week — there wasn’t enough beds.
So the twins — who had shared a room until about the age of eight — were forced to bunk in the night before their first AFLW game together.
“It was OK, she’s got a kingsize bed,” Jess laughed.
“It was fine.”
Sarah, meanwhile, will find vision herself being replayed all weekend after she received a kick to the groin from Collingwood’s Sarah D’Arcy that saw the Magpie reported immediately.
