AFL Women’s premiership captain Daisy Pearce’s senior coaching career will begin the ninth season of the women’s competition as part of a cross-country double-header.

Sydney and Collingwood will kick off the season – which begins on August 30, in the pre-finals bye of the men’s competition – at North Sydney Oval with West Coast to host Richmond in Perth later that evening.

The Showdown between Port Adelaide and Adelaide will be played at Alberton Oval under lights for the first time on August 31 as part of a super Saturday of five games.

It is the first time that the women’s competition will play 11 home and away matches, with the fixture spanning 10 weeks rather than specified “rounds”.

As part of a mid-season fixture compression, teams will play four games within three weeks with a number of games on Tuesday and Wednesday nights in a bid to maximise school holidays crowds and broadcast numbers in clear timeslots.

Weeks four to seven will see matches played on every day of the week except for Mondays, with Tuesday and Wednesday night games beginning at 7.15pm in local timeslots.

Pearce, who was appointed as West Coast coach at the end of last year, is embarking on her first season as senior coach after an esteemed playing career at Melbourne that included the season seven premiership.

The Eagles will host the only major stadium game of the season when they play Fremantle in the western derby on October 19 at Optus Stadium.

Indigenous Round will be marked in weeks nine and 10 of the fixture with Essendon and Richmond to play the Dreamtime game in Darwin on October 26.

League head of broadcast operations and scheduling, Josh Bowler, said it was also “important for our fans to maintain the weekend timeslot structure we have seen in previous seasons, while also adding an additional game midweek across the middle of the competition for fans to enjoy.”

Players were consulted in relation to the crammed month of games, with AFL Players’ Association head of AFLW Julia Chiera saying player health and safety in the busy period had been a key consideration.

“The AFLPA worked collaboratively with our player leaders and the AFL to ensure the design of this year’s fixture, including the addition of midweek games, was as fair as possible and that the scheduling balanced the players’ health, safety, and wellbeing as well as growth for the competition,” Chiera said.

“We look forward to an exciting season.”

The competition’s growth in coming years is subject to growth metrics relating to attendance and broadcast viewership, with midweek games considered by the league to be considered as outliers and standard round timeslots the prime focus for any growth considerations.

The final round of the fixture will have its timeslots confirmed closer to the end of the season as the final ladder placings take shape.
