ADELAIDE coach Bec Goddard has credited the sturdy backline for holding off a wave of attacks in the final quarter in the Crows’ first win of the AFLW season against the Western Bulldogs at Norwood Oval on Saturday.

But Goddard was quick to acknowledge the influence of the league’s best player — co-captain Erin Phillips — and how her return to injury was a cornerstone to the team’s return to form.
“It was some really good one-on-one football,” Goddard said. “Sarah Allan, Chelsea Randall, Dayna Cox ... the girls really stuck to their task and just held in there, held in there, held in there,” Goddard said. “And then when we had the chance to go we did.
“She (Phillips) put in a mighty performance today.
“But it wasn’t just her. Chelsea (Randall), Ebony (Marinoff), Dayna (Cox) ... Sarah (Allan) down back had the composure.
“But everybody came up around Erin.
“When she starts playing well everyone comes up around her.
“She contributed in the big way individually but the team also had a really great performance.”
The win has not only rescued a season from oblivion.
It has also given the Crows a new perspective of how they are capable of playing.
“We showed some vision at half time in what we wanted to do,” Goddard said. “I think that generated, ‘okay, now we know we can do it, let’s do it some more.
“You can start to talk a lot more positively around the football club,” Goddard said. “Today we did so many thing right and we’ll be able to exploit those during the week.”
