Collingwood small forward Jack Ginnivan is back in his side’s starting 22 for its clash against Greater Western Sydney as Giants captain Toby Greene has been left out after initially being named.

Ginnivan impressed coach Craig McRae as the substitute in the Magpies’ win over Sydney last week, kicking a goal from six touches after being deployed in the third term.

He replaces fill-in ruckman Billy Frampton, who McRae confirmed on Thursday would miss “a couple of weeks” after suffering a groin injury at training.

It means 32-year-old Mason Cox may be forced to take the bulk of the ruck duties up against Giants big man Matt Flynn.

But the Magpies have been boosted by the withdrawal of Giants skipper Greene.

Greene had been in doubt entering the game with a lower leg injury but despite being named in their squad on Thursday night, the dangerous goalkicker will not face the Magpies at the MCG on Sunday afternoon.

The Giants have called on Cameron Fleeton, 20, to make his AFL debut after strong form at VFL level.

The 192cm Geelong Falcons product has averaged 30 disposals and 14 intercepts possessions in the last fortnight as a medium defender.

Young Saints tall Anthony Caminiti will return from his three-week suspension to take on Adelaide, with Jade Gresham ruled out after failing a fitness test on Friday.

Ruckman Rowan Marshall has been named after coming into the match with an injury cloud, while the Crows have made the sole change with small defender Patrick Parnell replacing Nick Murray, who is observing the AFL’s concussion protocols.

Son of a gun’s rapid rise for debut

Son of a gun and recent recruit James O’Donnell will make his AFL debut for the Western Bulldogs under lights against Carlton on Saturday night.

O’Donnell, the son of dual sports star Simon, joined the club as a Category B rookie last month and it has taken him just three VFL games to earn a senior call-up after making the switch from cricket.

The 20-year-old becomes the third O’Donnell to feature at AFL level, with father Simon playing 24 games for St Kilda - along with his glittering cricket career which featured 87 ODI caps – and grandfather Kevin playing 40 matches for the Saints.

It has been a rapid rise for the 197cm fast bowler turned key defender, who is has averaged 15 disposals, eight intercepts and 72 SuperCoach ranking points per game for Footscray.

The Western Bulldogs’ key defensive stocks have been depleted with swingman Sam Darcy set for a stint on the sidelines after a hole was found in his lung, while Josh Bruce (ribs), Tim O’Brien (hamstring) are also on their injury list.

O’Donnell has surprisingly leapfrogged Ryan Gardner and Tim O’Brien (named emergency) in the key defensive stakes and will be called on to help stoppers Liam Jones and Alex Keath combat the last two Coleman medallists Charlie Curnow and Harry McKay.

He comes into the side for the injured Adam Treloar, with their opponents Carlton dropping youngsters Brodie Kemp and Josh Honey along with veteran Ed Curnow for Matt Cottrell and Matt Owies.

Meanwhile, Collingwood’s ruck crisis has struck again with fill-in Billy Frampton going down with injury at training.

Coach Craig McRae revealed on Thursday afternoon Frampton suffered a groin injury and was expected to “miss a couple of weeks”.

Frampton was the Magpies’ first-choice ruckman against Sydney on Sunday, recording a game-high 32 hit-outs.

His absence is likely to leave Mason Cox to shoulder the ruck burden against GWS Giants this weekend.

Collingwood said earlier this week Darcy Cameron was still at least one week away from returning from a knee injury.

It would be unlikely the Magpies would risk Cameron a week earlier than planned after sharing ruck duties between Frampton, Ash Johnson, Mason Cox and Daniel McStay in his absence.

Essendon will face the Brisbane Lions without in-form midfielder Darcy Parish who suffered a calf injury at training on Thursday, while Jordan Ridley and Jake Kelly will also miss with concussion.

Key forward Kaine Baldwin has been promoted for his first AFL game for the season and sam Durham will return from suspension.

Alastair Clarkson has lost patience with former North Melbourne captain Ben Cunnington after he was subbed out for the second time this season against the Saints last week, with the veteran making way for Hugh Greenwood.

Trent Cotchin will return to face Geelong after being managed for Richmond’sthe win over West Coast, with Noah Cumberland omitted after being subbed out with -10 SuperCoach ranking points along with forward Judson Clarke.

Geelong has brought in grand final sub Brandon Parfitt to replace Patrick Dangerfield after his hamstring blow.

The Cats’ prized draftee Jhye Clark, a 180cm midfielder, will make his debut in the green vest.
